Servis MK72

Hi Keith.

Great info, my Mum had the Servis MK72 when we lived in Scotland. I use to sit and watch the machine. Had very deep rinses.

It really amazes me how washers evolved differently on both sides of the pond with front loaders (until recently) never catching on here. I remember when i bought my first set in 1986 at Montgomery Ward. I bought a rebadged WCI Westinghouse that didn't say "Signature" on it, it just said "Montgomery Ward". They only carried one frontloader, it was a small Westinghouse. Even then they were expensive compared to larger top loaders.

CORDES

Even Cordes used it ... poor "Westinghouse" .... it has been used as a sort of "escort" badge *LOL*
Today it's an Electrolux badge, while oddly White-Westinghouse is the budget brand used by SMEG on italian market.

However CORDES was a very reliable german brand that produced also commercial laundry appliances. Miele aquired this Firm in 1986, however on ebay.de you can find some images of vintage Cordes machines (obviously also on german forums).

Consolidation of manufactuers

The sad fact I noticed like the car industry, electronics and other industries the makes are no longer independant and are now just large companies, sad how it has gone thats why so much stuff looks the same

250-300 £ today are part of the average monthly salary.
Guess that, back in the seventies, they were almost the whole salary.

Firms had a higher profit on each single machine, also small firms were able to survive with small production lots.

The more a firm grows up, the more has to sell
To sell more they have to cut prices
To reduce prices they cut costs
Some moves are clever : Electrolux has no more "AEG" parts and "Zanussi" parts. These are lower logistic costs. Compare current Aeg and zanussi dishwashers : they have just different racks, sprayarms and fascia, but cycles, tub, sump, filters and i guess pumps are the same. Pity they also save on the build quality of plastic parts ....

Not a case small firms that made nice products today don't exist anymore. Often their badges are now used by big corprations
