Started poking around looking at the idea of putting one of these monsters on a small piece of land someplace cheap as sort of an alternative cabin idea.

Both shown below hail from 1988. The first being a Winnebago, the other a Revcon.

These caught my eye as being huge and therefore more suited for their more stationary role.
So many brands out there, what's the gerenerally held pecking order among them?

Or more easily, what are the top manufacturers to consider that would could be had for around $5-6k?...like either of these two are going for. I expect they are going to be 20 years or older at that price, and probably have an issue or twelve. But I am not planning on heading cross country in it now, or ever.
It just needs to be able to get it from one long term home, to perhaps eventually another, here in the west coast and southwest areas.[this post was last edited: 3/28/2017-13:03]

Interesting idea! Although one worry I'd have would be theft of the vacation cabin. If it has wheels, it could be driven or towed away...

This was part of the plot in a Perry Mason case, The Case of the Sun Bather's Diary, in which Perry's client-to-be is out sunbathing in nothing or next to nothing when her high end trailer is stolen. This was both a book and TV episode (http://www.perrymasontvseries.com/wiki/index.php/EpisodePages/Show17).

OP, pic 2.  Some of these used the front wheel drive system or many components from the OLD's Toronado.  Is this one of them?  Just my brothers opinion, "Never buy an RV with an engine, always consider one you tow".  SBJ, there is a plethora of YouTube vids try "nomadic fanatic" while I doubt everything he says is doctrine, it will bring up tons of these vids, discussions.  Things I never would of thought of,  Jump up and down looking for weak floors,  water leaks are common on the front end cap and often hidden by built in cabinetry.  My dad would say "for what these cost you can spend many a night in a hotel".   I think that may not be as  true now days.  Nasty bedspreads/linens, bed bugs, poor security.

Some

have diesel pusher powertrains and are far better on fuel than towing a coach.
If I can have a class "A" or even a "C" that I drive over having to buy a tow vehicle in addition, for me, that's what I'd prefer.
A standard passenger car won't tow a big coach these days. None are rear drive or V8's with a frame to attach a Reese hitch to. A truck runs well over $40 grand equipped with a towing package and trailer brake wiring.

All good points vacerator,  I think my brother was looking at it from the standpoint of using the tow vehicle for his work and farm as opposed to tying up money in something that only does one thing.   The separate truck qualifies for tax deductions when used for farming or business.

Looked at this Airstream Land Yacht today. About the same price as the other two i have posted so far.
In the pictures it looks really sweet...in person i was able to keep my wallet holstered. Although i imagine it will sell much sooner than the other two. Seller did say the clear coat was rough...and i can confirm that. Wow, when i pulled up i thought wait, is this the same one as in the pictures? What seeing the Airstream made clear to me is there are no cheap motorhomes. Pay now AND pay later, so you better really want it.

The Executive is going for $500...no brakes, but he did find the title! Actually i kind of dig its no nonsense styling. Motorhomes of the 80's-2000 generally make me ill in the styling dept....especially for the price on pays.
