Orbital,1996,and seems nicely low usage:Got real cheap,as is,because the two parts were seperated and seller could not reassemble and test.Nice clean baseplate and very little paint wear in the dryer-no wear or nicks on agitator.may reassemble and test soon :) The Samsung,2008,was a repair inspection candidate until a caught a whiff of the stench from it... will get junked and some parts salvaged including the BLDC "pancake"motor.

Maytag dependable care top load stack

There have been many discussions about these machines. They mostly use the same parts as the dependable care, washer and stream of heat dryer. The dryer motor was unique however.

They are often a good source of parts if you restoring a standard Maytag large capacity washer, the mechanical parts of the washer are the same and it seems that the stack machines often weren’t used as much as they were usually in condominiums or households with only one or two people, etc.

The weak points were same as the stream of heat dryers the blowers failed all the time in the dryers they had problems with the rear drum roller over the heating element. The machine itself was very difficult to install because they were 8 feet on it and you had to get all 8 feet against the floor in the locknuts tightened , otherwise the machine could be a real vibration Problem was particularly hard because they were often in a tight closet.

But if everything was installed right, it was a pretty decent performer. It wasn’t as bulky as the whirlpool equivalent so it fit tighter spaces, but it also didn’t do nearly as large in either the washer or the dryer.

Lordy, people.  You're on a washing machine discussion board and you can't interpret the details?  LOL.

He picked up a 1996 Maytag unitary stacked set with orbital transmission, on which the dryer was separated for whatever reason and the seller couldn't figure out how to get it reattached.  It's in quite nice condition.

Also he picked up a 2008 Samsung (frontloader?) that looked nice for potential disassembly and refurb until the smutz stench in it became apparent.  So he's junking it and saving parts that have some potential value.[this post was last edited: 9/15/2024-09:58]

Usually it's the standard areas after 20+ years.

Damper pads (check if they're still planted, lube if in good condition)

Check the belts, motor carriage for smooth operation, water pump pulley for smooth operation.

Water leaks around the injector.

Water valve screens.

Check the stem/boot seal for leaks.

Listen for noise from the tub bearing during the spin cycle.

Oil leak around the lower trans seal.

Disassemble the dryer clean, check drum rollers, idler wheel and lube if they're in good condition. Replace if not.

Inspect the belt, blower wheel, all seals, and front glides.

I have one, it was my mother's for 30 years until a screw pin in the trans shaft broke. She just replaced with a new WP unit and I took the stack to see what happened. Turned out to be an easy fix and now works just like new. Mine is gas. What john said about blower fans in the dryer is so true. I've replaced this one at least three times but it is easy to do.
