My 0519 is ALIVE!

Well, thanks once again to Launderess, my Hoover Twin Tub 0519 is alive and running great. The pump that she sold me was in excellent shape, and after swapping it out for my old one, I dumped some hot water down both tubs, and other than a small drip that came from a coupler in between the wash tub pinch valve and the wash tub outlet, I saw no other leaks. A hose clamp on the coupler fixed that drip, and I proceeded to do a couple of test washes. Afterwards, I emptied the wash tub, and rolled the washer over to check for drips on the floor... natta!

Just for fun, a day or so later I tried a small experiment. I wanted to see how much more water the twin tub would extract than my GE Filter Flo. Unfortunately, I didn't have an accurate enough scale to weigh the test load properly, so I'm going to repeat the test later on when I can get a hold of a better scale. I did find out that even though two pairs of my jeans will fit in the TT spinner (I'm a big boy at 6' 4" tall), I can only wash one pair at a time, as two pairs refuse to roll at all in the wash tub, and even with only one pair, I can hear it rubbing against the wash impeller quite a bit. Very surprised though at the apparent weight difference after spinning for two minutes in the Hoover versus a seven minute spin in my Filter Flo.

I for one am glad you've got the old girl up and running!

Replacement of the pump is pretty much almost standard when one comes upon a Hoover TT. Had to do if for mine and truth to tell the pumps probably are some of the weakest points of the washer.

That's for sure, Launderess. I got so fed up with a leak around the joint (where the two halves of the bakelite pump fit together, I just caulked the outside. That fixed it good!

But for long as one owns the machine they aren't going anywhere. Didn't mind moving on the pump to "Barcoboy" since it doesn't fit my machine and don't see myself owning another besides the one.

Well I certainly appreciate the sale Launderess.

I did unsnap the three clips off the old pump and separated it, and as I suspected, it was full of hard water scale. At some point I am going to rebuild it to have as a spare. And I am certainly going to take care of the new pump!

Good job with the caulking bradross! Hope you don't ever have to separate it again though.

And BTW, my real name is Todd. Hmmm... I thought that I had uploaded an avatar to the site. Guess I will have to fix that.

After Using My TT

Am careful to rinse out both tubs then fill the wash tub about halfway with hot water, then pump it out. One does this to flush out any remaining detergent residue and so forth to keep it from setting up home and subsequently drying inside the thing.

The old pump that came with my Hoover TT (which was otherwise minty fresh) was also caked with dried detergent residue/scale as well. Must be a common thing with these machines.

Cannot imagine what the insides of those pumps look like if soap was used instead of detergent for washing day.

Glad to hear this, barcoboy! Great news. Yep, I too agree that those pumps are the weak point of those machines. Think another somewhat weak spot is the (wash) timer which, more than once, may be not working. However, seems that even if the timer does not rotate automatically as it should the pulsator can still function normally, but one has to make sure to turn the knob manually to the Stop position in order to cease washing operation. Of course the Off position stops everything; wash and spin motors (as well as the pump) will not respond as the washing machine is sort of put to sleep.

BTW, I had problem with a couple of worn out screws from the control panel (blue top plate). I was obliged to drill, then pull off the residues and after that put in place the brand new screws (absolutely identical to the original Hoover, wow!). I got those relatively rare screws from a specialized machinist parts and metal work reseller in my hometown named Pieces de machinerie Delisle. This is 'the' place. They usually have what others don't---even the biggest hardware stores. ;-)

Hoovers TT's sure seem to be really appreciated these days what with them no longer being manufactured.
Glad that there are people like us AutomaticWasher.org types whom are rescueing them and giving them life again.
