I need to remove the agitator on my Maytag washer. A professional said (to my friend today,I wasn't home) that it has to be muscled off since there is no set screw fastening it to the drive shaft. He tried to force it off but was afraid he was going to break it. I would appreciate any insight from anyone in this club who has had paid experience working on helical drive Maytags. Thank you.

Dump a few pots of boiling water down the center of the agitator and let it sit for 20 minutes or so. Use long rubber dishwashing gloves, reach underneath the agitator, and pull it straight up. Don't be afraid to get physical with it as the poly agitators rarely break, they usually just flex. The older Bakelite agitators are a whole different story!!
