I have taken the original motor out and put in another one and it is still smoking! I'm pretty positive I have the motor relay switch hooked up right and I can't seem to find any other problems. Any pointers??

Isn't it pretty normal for old 70s electrics to smoke? All owners of old British sports-cars know you need to keep the Lucas wiring harnesses topped up with smoke, a new jar of Lucas smoke has to be bought every so often... ;-)

Is something like a pump locked-up and you are smoking the belt? Bad bearing?

The tub turns freely, an both motors were smoking

Does the pump turn freely? If something jams the pump there can be trouble.
By the way, it isn't outfitted as a RimFlo, it has the clothes guard not a rim filter, it will need a pan.

many times it is recommended that when you switch out a motor, you change the relay as well.....
if both motors are smoking, I would go to the relay next.....
also, try running without the belt or the pump sleeve....lets get the motor issues fixed first, then move on if other issues turn up....
never hurts to make sure the wires are on the right terminals...

Seriously though, Yogitunes' idea to try just the motor, with no belt attached, is a good one. you will isolate whether it is a motor or wiring fault, or if there is something seized that stops the motor turning freely.

Lol smokes all the time, but I jus turn it on spin an it starts smoking after 5 seconds then I turn it off. I also changed the relays, but I'm not sure if it's hooked up correctly. I've tried it several different ways. I'll try an see if the pump turns freely but I'm sure it will bc the tub turns smoothly.

Most times when this happens it’s the start winding that shorting and burning it’s usually caused by a bad relay, whenever you change a motor on a GE washer that has an electrical fault you should replace the relay.
GE used 1/3 and 1/2 hp motors in the each use different relays depending on how old the machine as there may be an additional relay that’s different for the early 60s models.
Most important thing is to make sure you have The correct relay and have it wired correctly, also if the motor has smoked pretty badly you’re going to have to replace the motor once they’re fairly overheated and shorted they won’t recover even with a new relay.

Having the relay wired up may be my problem bc the tub/ pump turns freely. How do u know the correct way to hook it up?
