Not as great as Chuck & Rich's remodel but it was several of you all who convinced me to do it.

Here is the picture of the destruction. Tomorrow is the installation of the Silestone. YIPPEE!

Lookin' Good!!

Heather!

That is going to be a gorgeous kitchen!! It doesn't seem like it now, but it will be well worth the hard work; and just in time for the holidays!!

Yay... I didn't even know what Silestone was till someone here, maybe you, mentioned it not long ago. Then I saw it in newspaper flyer at HD and IIRC it was more expensive than their granite but I can't find the flyer now. Is it more expensive in the US than granite?

Brazilian Brown

We went with Brazilian Brown (that's the only way I am ever getting anything Brazilian much to my husband's dismany-too much info I know).

I sure hope I love it as much as I did at the Expo design center. We ended up getting it at Expo because we got an awesome deal. It was just a little over $62/sq ft installed. They were $5 cheaper a square foot ($69 a sqare foot) than Home Depot (which was $74 a square foot). Then, they had a sale going on with an additional 10% off. Plus, if you opened a credit account, you got another $200 off. Also, Silestone had a prompotion that if you bought over 25 feet of countertops, you got a free Elkay undermount double bowl, stainless steel sink.

Click on the link for the color.

All in all, I got the countertops and appliances disconnected, extra cutout for the cooktop, installation of the Silestone, and reconnection of all appliances for less than $5000. I do have 62+ feet of countertop space. It would have been only $4500 if my husband could have taken out the appliances but he is mechanically challenged. I have a ceiling fan that I bought months ago and it's still sitting there because he has no idea how to install it. I have made sure he has plenty of life insurance since he is so terrible at household chores (he was an insurance salesman but now he trains people how to sell). He sliced the end of his finger off with a sharp knife opening a package of headphones. Now you all see how challenged he really is. LOL

Private granite/countertop companies were quoting $6500-$7000 for installation of both granite and Silestone. I just didn't want to deal with granite sealing and maintenance.

I am sitting here waiting, twiddling my thumbs, until they get here. My son is watching the movie CARS for the 5th time since I got it yesterday. I am going NUTS! ;>)

Forgot to say.........

I forgot to say that the guy who came to measure the space, etc said that Silestone is now the preferred countertop among new home builders. They don't like the hassle of granite installation and the restrictions of the material. The company (Quartz Concepts) that is doing the install has dropped all granite installation and only does Silestone now.

Also, the guy said that Expo is always much cheaper on these types of items than Home Depot (for any of you looking).

First pic

One countertop in, no backsplash yet. The pics were too big to upload this time.

They are having issues with the cooktop. The laminate countertop was thicker than the Silestone and the cooktop sat up high enough it didn't matter. I might loose the function of one drawer, right under the cooktop.

THEY BROKE A PIECE!!!!!!

They broke the section that houses my cooktop and they have NO IDEA when they can get a new piece made. :(

I am not a happy camper.

I called Expo and gave them an ear full and they are supposed to get back to me in 2 hours.

Can they do a temporary patch on the broken piece so that you can at least have a functional kitchen while you are waiting for a replacement?

I bought my Silestone two years ago. The color I chose was a new color and they were having a special on it. They also Gave a free sink with over 20 ft. of counter tops and I got 10% off for applying for a Home Depot card. I seem to remember the price being about $62/sq.ft. installed.

Putting things back together

Here is the shot of the important "appliance" garage. I have too much crap to have one of those on top of the counter so this takes up all of my island!

I like the pieces that are here.

Everything looks nice, except for the section where the cooktop was.

It does look nice..nuts to them breaking a piece though when you're all anxious to have it done..grrrr. Ask for another discount for the anguish!!!
BTW I see you hae a Melitta One:One coffee maker.. I got one and now I'm pissed off because I can't find the pods anywhere, at any store. I called the 800 number and none of the stores they say carry them carry them anymore here in Canada at least. Maybe that's why they were clearing the machines out everywhere.. LOL He did say I could order them over the phone from the US but it would be like double the price and I don't like it that much..grrrr

Hi Heather

So sorry to learn that your kitchen is remodel is on "hold"

What is finished sure looks great!

Guess if it will be awhile, your husband will have to take you out for dinner every night until the counter top is finished. <:

Pizza tonight!

Well, we did order pizza tonight. :)

I will have to get a one burner hot plate and use it.

They also drilled the hole for the faucet off center. I may have to get that piece replaced too. I guess I am just not lucky on this one. I am being slightly nice right now but I will get pissy if I have to.

PETE-That's my husbands coffee maker (my hot tea maker is beside it). We bought the coffee maker when it was on close out and also bought a lot of the pods. I know that you can still buy the pods at Target though. I can look and see what flavors they have the next time I am there. I ship packages all the time for eBay to Canada so it would be no trouble to send them to you.

Appliance Garages

I never understood appliance garages. It's a kitchen and kitchen appliances should be there. Hiding them, buring them in cupboards, makes them hard to use and so they sit in hiding, while cooking by hand is harder and less efficient. The garage eats up scads of real estate and you have to haul the appliance out of the garage and then relocate it to a space where it can be used. Just give me sweet counter space, my essentials plugged in and ready to go and smelling salts for the poor weak hearted who happen into the kitchen and see an appliance!
