Hi guys,

Just this evening I've treated myself to a new washer, in as-new condition for £69.99. It's a refurbished AEG Lavamat 620, absolutely stunning in the photo - looks like new! Even has the green Oko Lavamat sticker!

I've seen a 610 in action before which is the 900rpm version of this machine, and it does the infamous Variomatic spin sequence and has fairly decent water levels from what I remember. I've also wanted one of these washers (this washer exactly, as it goes) since I was about 5, and thought why not when it came up on eBay as it would have been a missed chance otherwise and now the 86741 has gone to my nana's, and that the VTD20 Hotpoint dryer is being sold then I've got room for one or two more additions :-).

Not sure when I get it yet, haven't arranged when to collect it as I haven't told mum yet (ooops lol), Darren if you're reading this send me a text and if you want to this can be another one of our road trips :-).

I'm also tempted to bid on a 6205 in Nottingham, which is the 1996 version of this machine but with the stain action cycle too... should I? :-).

Will keep you all updated,

Jon

Ooo! :)

Very interesting, Jon! :)

Hang on while I tell your Mum! hehe ;)

Looking forward to hearing more about this machine. :) I used to read AEG brochues in the 1990s! hehe :) (Don't worry, Darren - you know I also read Hoover New Waves ones, too! hehe :))

Carl :)

I like the look of those AEG's. Very solid and classy, even now. They're better than today's Electrolux based models lol.

I'm already impressed with sparkcymru's model, it's a great machine! I wouldn't mind 1 of those myself!

I also like how they kept the basic design unchanged for many years.

Jonny, I hope you enjoy owning your newly purchased AEG, may it give you many years of service! You'll let me know when you've got it and installed it, I wonder if there will be a video of it in action!

I look forward to hearing more about it!

Hi Jon,

Congratulations on the 620! It's a fun machine to play with. I prefer the timer of the 600 series over the one of the 6000 series. The 600 series is much nicer for the real dial pusher! LOL

The timer of the 6000 series is less flexible because it can only start working on the points that are marked. So no possibility to start in the middle of the spin cycle like you can with the 600 series. I had to get used to that with my AEG.

BTW, what do you mean by the stain cycle? I only know the water softener start at the beginning of the cycle of my AEG in which the water softener like Calgon is flushed out of the drawer and the washer starts to tumble for five minutes with hardly any water in it. It's the most annoying thing about my AEG!

Where are you going to put this machine? Is it back to bedroom laundry corner again?

Lots of fun with it!

Louis

Jon i'm well pleased you've got your AEG. As u know my 971 is in daily use and I love it it was the best decision I ever made. Its admired by all who come into my kitchen. Now let me just drop by and remind your mother that a new arrival is expected lol. I hope Darrens about to help u. If not shout help!

A real AEG no less!

Hello Jon,
Congratulations on getting your AEG and a real one at that! Those machines use AEG's own Motors which are reliable, smooth, quiet and the brushes seem to last for ever in them.

Happy washing.

Variomatic spin profile...

Does the variomatic sequence really spin, then stop and actually reverse tumble, then spin again at a faster speed?

I ask because I had a 1998 year model which I presumed had such a sequence, but turned out to have a current Bosch style of spin ( several minutes of intermediate speed, followed by deceleration to distribute speed, then ramp up to the top speed. It never actually reverse tumbled to redistribute the clothes during the spin sequence; though it did at the end, as the door lock disengaged to allow access).

variomatic spin

i dont know if this is the same thing, but on my AEG i can select it to do a gentle spin which still spins at 1600 or whatever you select it to, and do as you say, slow all the way down, tumble and then spin again and so forth, this adds around an extra 10 mins on the cycle and is supposed to prevent the laundry from being stuck to the sides of the drum when it finishes.

It's here!

Well Steve (sparkcymru) and I went to collect the AEG today from Mansfield... have to say it's in immaculate condition! Only needed a quick wipe - the dispenser was a bit gunky but nothing a bit of hot water couldn't fix. Same for the door seal but that was fine once it was run through a maintenance wash!

The machine is so solidly built - even more so than the Miele. Absolutely bulletproof. Nice, quiet motor, though it is fairly loud in the max spin but no louder than our Zanussi or Bosch machines were at the same speed. Spin cycles are really good - it spins at 1000rpm for 7 or 8 minutes and it gets things as dry as if they were spun at 1200 or 1300rpm... interesting ramps up to the spins too! Will do a lot of stepping up (nice powerful whirr from the motor as it steps up speeds), and will then slow down again to about 150rpm and step up again, before boosting to 1000rpm after it has stepped up what seems like 100 different speeds. (Rolls - that's what the Variomatic spinning is). Rinses well - only does 3 rinses though rather than 4 that are marked on the dial, and I can't work out how to set the extra rinse as there is a hole underneath the soap drawer with markings for the extra rinse option but there doesn't seem to be any switch at all to switch between the markings. Doesn't bother me as it rinses well as it is, but still would be nice to have the 4th rinse every now and then.

Cycles are very quick - got through a cottons 40*C wash - programme 3 - in 50 minutes. Also fills for rinses as it slows down from interim spin (which are at 1000rpm). Not used the delicate cycles yet but will try them out in a couple days when I've got a load to do. Water levels are decent - come up to where the door becomes flat in the rinses though it is shallower on the final rinse and only just touches the door glass.

Anyway, here are some pictures! Excuse the quality, just from my camera phone as I can't find the upload lead for my digital camera.

Buttons. From left to right - easy care/woollens (depends on which programme you select - if you press it with a cottons cycle it will do an easy care cycle, if you press it with a delicate cycle it will do a wool wash), energy saving (brings 95*C washes down to 67*C), half load, spin reduction from 1000rpm to 700rpm. The C button pops all the buttons out - the buttons only push in and cant be pushed back out again so the C button releases all the buttons when you press it. The higher end models did this automatically when you pressed the door open button.

AEG heaven!

Well Jon I have to say that was a gr8 trip out for the AEG depsite the sat nav getting us in a spin!

It looks really gr8 now its in place and compliments that Miele nicely. I love that spin build up. The motor sounds so good on these when it does that. Happy washtimes ahead me thinks!

Ciao

Wonderful Jon, I love the sight of an AEG and a Miele next to eachother! LOL

I had a look at an AEG brochure, but there is no information about the availability of a fourth rinse on various models. The 620 btw is not in that brochure, the 610 and the 615 are.

The step up spin that you are describing is not the variomatic but the sensortronic system. The variomatic is what it does after the permanent press and delicate cycle (at least my 625 did that). Higher end models also had a variomatic button. It had two functions, skip the rinse hold after the cycles with that and also the possibility of getting a variomatic spin after a cotton wash. Several spins with tumbling in between. The final spin is shorter on the cottons cycle when the variomatic button is used. The lowest model with the variomatic button was the 630.

BTW, could you make a picture of the cycle chart? I'm curious about the meaning of the numbers, it is different than my 625.

Congrats jon! The machine looks really well for its age!

Any chance of a rinse piccie:D

Will you still be using your mums miele for any of your things or are you using the aeg for everything?

Darren

Congratulations Jon,
That machine looks like brand new. I always loved the styling of the real AEG's very Germanic.

Happy washing.

Lavamat Bella!!

Nice one Jon, nothing better than finding your childhood dream, the for me realising how young you are...LOl, I sold these machines when you where a babe in arms etc...they are solid & sturdy machines, built to last and do the job well...

Would be interested to hear about the difference between the Miele and AEG on a normal 40d cycle, times variations etc??

Nowthen, I see a space for...HHmmmmm, a matching dryer, keep a lookout everybody...LOl..(hears mums voice shouting in the background)

Enjoy, Mike
