My machine needs damper pads & the triangular mounted outer tub centering springs changed. I have ordered the parts online & I have the link to contact Fred Nelson's Maytag technician.When the parts arrive I will contact him.My question is does anyone here know how to disassemble this machine? I cannot find exploded views of it anywhere on line including the place I ordered the parts from. I would really like to learn how to at least (for now) locate these parts on my unit & replace them. Most of the parts are still available for helical drive washers according to where I ordered the parts. The friend I live with & especially myself want to hold on to this washer. We are willing to pay a larger service call fee to Dan or any other experienced Maytag technician to fix my unit. Incidentally I have been to Fred Nelson's twice & have seen his "Beverly Hillbillies" models 900 series beauties

Damper pad and spring replacement is an easy job to carry out. However, you'll need the brake tool to remove the brake package so you can remove the "tree" in order to get at the damper pads. Once the damper pads are glued in, let the glue set for 24 hours before reassembling.

I have never heard of a spring breaking on these units, but have seen plenty of rusty ones from leaky outer tub bolt seals. Is the spring rusty or broken?

you can cheat on changing the pads

Yes and no... You would release the springs and lift the main top then use a block of wood to raise the tree to lube the pads. You might be able to change pads only that way BUT:

1)If the damper bowl is damaged, it MUST be replaced or it will rip the new pads right off.

2)You need to clean the base frame completely. All grease, grime, leftover pads AND old adhesive must be removed for the new pads to glue on and stay on. If you can clean the baseframe while using the block without damaging the still good damper, then ok. I find it's just a little bit more to just pull the drive pulley and brake and be able to clean the base right.

Question for Red

Hello Red;

Great article on the Maytag bearing change, thanx.
Question is: Can you explain how to put that turbine oil in the bushing, as you mentioned in the article? Also, can you put lube in from the bottom of the machine?
