I have a 4 year old Maytag side by side refrigerator with ice and filtered water in the door. The auger that drives the ice out through the door has started making an awful buzzing sound when it runs. It still works ok, but the noise lets me know something isn't right. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be, or how I can fix it? Tim

The buzzing sound might be the solenoid binding. Check the ice bin to make sure there isn't a piece of ice at the back of the bucket. There is a shaft that extends thru the back of the ice bucket that mates with an opening in the back of the freezer, where the bucket slides in. Hope this helps!

?

Well, there is not any ice behind the ice bin. Is this a sound that all of these type refrigerators make? Mine sounds like a "dryer buzzer" when you get ice. The flow of the water is really slow too. It has a filter, but the change filter light has not come on. Could this just be another one of Maytag's "flops?"

Crushed ice solenoid

I have a 29' side by side Maytag, and the sound you are hearing most probably comes from the solenoid which switches between ice cubes or crushed ice. This solenoid is located at the back of the freezer compartment, right behind the ice bucket, and it lifts a lever of the ice bucket every time you ask for ice cubes (it isn´t energized if you select crushed ice).
The solenoid burned out some time after it started making this noise and had to be replaced.
I hope this helps.

The Trouble

OK I think I have found the problem. I pulled out the ice bin again, tripped the door switch, and called for ice. The device in the back was turning, but buzzing was coming from the door. I touched the flap that opens to allow the ice to fall through, and it stopped. I tried it again, and the buzzing resumed. But when it touched the flap it stopped again. It sounds like a LOUD vibrating noise. Is there some adjustment for this? Is the flap opening too far? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Tim
