My Nan's Electrolux finally bit the dust

some of you may remember a few months back about my nanny's electrolux being on its way out due to bad bearings....sadly after 4 consecutive washes on Saturday,

it gave up... on its final spin it sounded like a jet taking off sadly that was to be its (final) spin as it wheezed and grumbled i felt that was enough quite sad to see it that way after 9 years of use...the noise was unbelievable when it ramped up to 900 it was crystal clear in the garden with all doors and windows closed..it actually used to wake me up on a sunday morning haha...

it will still work but i think its gone beyond it now...although i might power it up for a spin one last time for u guys and upload it to you tube...if you'd like me to that is

anyway this saturday the new machine will be here. its a zanussi zwi1125.

Dont buy that new Zanussi, its rubbish in comparison to the old Zanussi (electrolux)!

The new machine has a welded tub! the electro-mechanical timer on the old zanussi is bloody reliable compared to the new all electronic machine.

Bearings on these are not a too bad job to do!

ah the new machine is already bought and the old one is nackard... the bearings, spider and motor are all nackard in it...i know the new one isn't going to be early as reliable as the old one but its all done and dusted now...come saturday the new zanussi will be here..im going to do a vid of the electrolux on final spin one last time before it goes.

funny you mention about the mechanical timer on the old one...that what im really going to miss( the silnt ticking as is went throught the wash) i love mechanical timer machines...seems everything is electronic now

Aw, shame to hear about the Electrolux machine's demise.

Am sure it could've been repaired back to its former glory though. Why not put it on eBay?

Not a personal critisism as most people seem to do this but i do wish we didn't live in such a throw-away society these days

ah yes..my nanny swears by elctrolux group... she's only ever had electrolux machines but yes shame about the old E-lux gonna miss it but im going to do a vid of it spining later....

These machines aren't that bad... my sister has the freestanding version of this the ZWF12070 and shes had it for 2 years coming up now, solid use with a young toddler and despite an issue with the pump in the first couple months has been stellar. The 6kg machines are still based on the XC design so are pretty much tried and tested. A far better buy for £230 than any Indesit or Beko would have been.

The Elux models I'm not sure about though are the newer 7/8kg ones with plastic pulleys, makes you wonder what else they've skimped on, but the proof is in the pudding and it is early days yet with these newer high capacity versions. Saying that my auntie has a new integrated 1400rpm Electrolux, and it is indeed very quiet compared to her previous machine.

I think Bertrum was comparing the new Zanussi to the model it's replacing, which is likely to last longer if repaired than the new Zanussi.

I don't think the latest Zanussi's are that bad either. As a new machine people could do alot lot worse, but theyre never up there with the older ones, like the Electrolux photographed above.

As you know we also have a modern Zanussi, similar to your sisters. Ours being the Essential ZWF14170W. Its 2 & half years old & except for the temperature dial jamming & having to be pulled apart recently, its also going well.

However I disagree that theyre based on the XC machines. Im sure these later machines no longer have the split tub design of the XC - ours definately doesn't have the split cabinet side panels, which suggests to me a bearing replacement would be more labour intensive & in turn, more costly. And im sure they also use different (cheaper) electronics - the decent ones being one of the keys to long service in the XC range.

I thought Bertrum was an engineer too, so might no more about the inner workings of these machines than either of us!

As far as I'm aware (though admittedly this is second hand information from a conversation one of my friends had with their Zanussi engineer whilst having their 7kg Essential repaired), the 6kg machines still have the split cabinet drum assembly of the XC models, and still share the same parts whereas the higher capacity machines have the sealed drums, plastic drum pulleys etc. Of course I'd love to see a service diagram or similar as to whether this is true or not, but this is what I understand to be the case.

On balance, my friend who has the aforementioned Zanussi washer has had a couple of repairs so far, not to mention the Zanussi we had which broke within a month, but still not bad machines especially compared to others on the market at similar prices.

They have lessened quality slightly. Hasnt everyone? Even miele! *cough*. They said this with the XC machines because many failed with dodgy electronics after 2years. But there are many still alive and kicking 8-9years on. including my mums AEG based upon the same design! I'd quite like a Zan XC to add to the line up now i have my own garage.

My zanussi zwf12070G1 has given me no complaints. Washing for four of us. Now she resides on a parttime schedule in the garage with the rest of my collection while the LG takes the daily duty. Which is superb.

I had to wonder what was to be achieved by changing from the tried and tested unique to elux split cabinet design. It was very very good for access upon repairing. My wdt1085 washer dryer has this design and still has its repart of the cabinet removed while i contemplate a bearing replacement some months after i bought it!

Also i've aqquired a brand new beko from my dad as a gift that was intended for one of his rental propertys but hes sold the business and said i could have it.

Hi Darren,

Can agree with you there with the demise of quality on a whole across the industry - a lot of it being forced with the rising costs of fossil fuels, materials, haulage etc. A few years down the line after buying ours, whilst being a great washing machine, not quite sure the matching tumble dryer is as good as Miele claim - especially when it comes to trying to get customer service when something is wrong that they don't want to admit - but that's another story . But definitely not as refined as the older models were as with anything.

I don't think my sisters Zanussi is a bad machine - definitely has it's work cut out and has had solid use for a couple years now - probably has a few more left in it yet.

Which Beko have you got? They're not bad machines for what you can pick them up for especially compared to the Haier stuff which is leaking it's way in.

well the old e-lux is gone but the new zanussi is in i quite like it with the super quick option enabled on cottons 40 it reduces the wash time from 2 hours to about an hour..which is quite good... it does 5 rinses with extra rinse enabled...and is very very quiet.... i have done a vid of the E-lux spining before it was taken away ill upload it sometime this week as im maxed out with all the college work i have to do
