My Neutral fried everything when it went. Everything comes in threes and
after my Heatpump, plumbing and my power problem I pray that is all.
Have yours Checked if your place is on the old side.
My Townhouse was built in the 60s and like all things that get older .
The best thing was that I did not have Aluminum wiring that is a disaster waiting to
happen.
If your lights flash like get brighter at odd times.
My washer with that inverter motor when ever it run it would dim the lights a lot
when it would do its back and forth thing.
He found that the Neutral has been failing and was getting VERY Dangerous for a long time. It was outside at the box there was just one small wire that was attached outside when he checked it.
The other wires go torched the other day when I shorted out the dishwasher.
Luckily he only charged me 200 bucks to fix it which was so nice . I have spent SOOOOO much money in the last 6 months on this place.
I lost about 5000 bucks in torched flatscreen, Laptop,P.C. Blueray, ETC .
Which sucks but I didn't burn my place down so that is a win in my book .
Have yours checked lose Neutrals are a huge cause of Electrical fires .
So have yours checked folks..

I figured that an open neutral was the likely problem, based on the description you gave.

We had that happen in the early 70's, but it didn't ruin anything as there weren't many electronic things back then like there are now.

Yup.

I hate to say it but it really is time that we rethink the North American electrical system. What was already marginal in the 19th century has just become unacceptable in an era of delicate electronics.
