OK, here's what's happening. I had to move out here to Opelousas to run from Hurricane Katrina. I lost most of my stuff back there in Chalmette and I'm living with parents. Using some of the money from the flood insurance, my parents are building me and 2-bedroom cottage in the back of their house. Money was put down a few days ago and I will photograph every step of the way and video if possible.

So here's the humble beginnings. It's only posts with flags but in a few months it will be the future site of the first ever Opelousas wash-in.

They're going to pack in some dirt so the trucks can roll over the ground without sinking in.

This is looking towards the street.

And when I get my w/d set, and hopefully some people in Texas might help me with a vintage washer ;-), we're going to to have ourselves a good old Cajun wash-in.

Jason, this is going to be a whole lot of fun! Are you doing the work or is it being hired out? And I have to ask, what's the plan for the washer discharge? Tie-in to city sewer? You've got a lot going for you! Cory

very, very exciting , your first home ? wow, you must be ecstatic .......... very happy for you :)

Congrats, jason

And locks on the doors!!! ;-) Yipee for you.

I'm hoping to move into something more hurricane proof myself this year.

Good luck with the new build. And ya better invite me to the wash-in, the casinos are on the way, LOL

Now Toggly, of course there will be windows (with blinds of course) and definitely locks on the doors. I already sat my parents down and laid down the law... "PRIVACY NOW! You're smothering the life out of me." and they told me I'll have all the privacy I want. The laundry room is going to be extra big for a small collection and some storage.

This will be my first (non-mobile) home.

Jason, that is too cool. How much of the planning are you getting to do? Some years ago, some friends of mine built a garage with an apartment above. Their intent was that I would rent it from them, so basically they said, "The upstairs is 24'x26', the door is here, tell us where you want walls and windows." I got to plan out my kitchen and everything. Of course, I also got to install that kitchen, plus do all the plubming and wiring. I got some free rent out of that, though.
Anyway, it will be fun to watch your project!

I got to plan pretty much all of it and the builder put it in his home builder software. He had a strange looking house plan so I used The Sims (don't laugh, it does work) to build my little cottage. I came out with a 2 bed, 1 bath with an open kitchen/living room, a carport with a huge utility room (for washins of course). Also, I want a fireplace so I agreed on a propane one (no chimney). I drew it up on paper what I wanted and he did the rest.
