A HP would be nice but I'm already at my budget, so I'll use the gas fireplace and my space heater. It doesn't get that cold here anyway.

Will there be central air?
If not, please consider a split system. Much quieter than a through-the-wall self-contained A/C! And it heats as well.
Just remember any references to Mr. Slim are NOT referring to Jason junior.(Ducks and runs)!

Personally I may (have to) add heavy-duty locking casters to my full-sized machines to make them portable.
Hopefully I can find a "spindle " modle that locks and that screw right into where the legs were. Is there a std. size for all machines or is this random like *everything else* in this country?

Those "Mr. Slim" A/c's are neat. The server room where I work has one of those, under the "Environaire" label. Same unit, with a remote that acts as the thermostat.
But I'm getting central ac/heat but thanks for the tip.

Suggestion: Install a decoy thermostat (that isn't hooked up to anything) for your parents to fiddle with when they visit.
Hide the real thermostat under some sort of ventilated wall decoration or louvered cabinet bottom. Only you and Helen will know where the real one is. LOL!

This is a fairly typical arrangement in some parts of the South, according to what I've been told.
In many(not all) cases the adult son(s) have a "Garconniere" (Son's house) on the property, and eventually the son and his wife (partner) outgrow it with children, and the parents' swap the "big house."
Not that that would happen here, just typical.

The contractor said 2 washer hookups is no problem.
Lawrence, very interesting. I know us Cajuns like to build what's called an "outdoor kitchen", an extension of the house which is an extra kitchen, or it can be a small cottage, or in my case, a full blown 2 bed, 1 bath house. I've never heard of the Garconiere but it makes sense.

What is a "lavatory" in USA? is it what we call a "vanity basin", ie: the sink in the bathroom?
In AU, the word "lavatory" means the toilet, though it is an old fashioned word not used much now.
I can't imagine anyone hooking a washing machine up to a "lavatory". well actually I can and it's not a pretty sight...

A lavatory is the sink in the bathroom where you wash your hands, etc. A portable washer can be hooked to the lav or to the kitchen sink via a unicouple.

I've never heard the term lavatory applied to a sink or to a single toilet. In my American experience, it is used synonymously with "washroom" or "bathroom" and generally when one asks to visit the lavatory, it is understood that using a toilet is the main purpose.
