As you may have gathered, from this post, Jed was down visiting from Duluth this weekend... Since playing with Jon Charles' deLuxe 'Model 95' Ironrite this past summer at his home in Boston, I knew I had to have one someday.  That someday was turned into this weekend... the first sale we went to on Saturday had this in the basement.  I spotted the machine itself for $10 -- then I spotted the chair, across the basement for $15.  I nabbed them both.

We left, went to some other sales -- then came back around 3pm to haul this beast upstairs and to the truck.  It must have weighed 125 awkward lbs, but Jed and I managed to get it up and onto the truck, no problem.  Robert carried the chair.  :-) Thank goodness I had been texting about my find with Jon; he was able to instruct us to carry it up the stairs motor-end first, so the oil didn't leak out of the transmission!

It was a filthy mess, as you can see, from having been sitting in the basement.  A good scrubbing with some de-greasing kitchen cleaner was done once the Betty Feezor spaghetti sauce was slow-cooking in the Crock Pot...  It made some wonderful rags for Jed and Robert to wash.

It cleaned up really nicely!  The pad cover was ripped, so I took it off and reinstalled it backwards, so I now have a fresh, unripped ironing surface.  I will eventually get a new pad and cover for it!  I also gave it an oil-changed today; drained out the 4 or so oz. of old transmission oil, and put back 5 oz of Royal Purple oil.  It runs just beautifully!  Such a neat, mechanical contraption!  I ironed my shirt for work tomorrow... after dampening it with one of our Frigidaire laundry sprinklers!  :-)

Here's the Ironrite as found...

The knee controls -- one of the reasons I love this model!  Right lever raises and lowers the roll/starts & stops the roll; the left lever pauses the roll to press a seam.  The original, cloth cord is in perfect shape, too.  There are pockets on the left and right, as well -- that's where the owners manual and other ironing accessories are to be kept!

In case you didn't believe me that it's called a 'health chair'.

Welcome To My World

Ironers That Is.

Congrats on the great find. While the picture is wonderful you need a pinny (pinafore) or apron on! No self respecting housewife irons on her mangle without a pinny. Tsk, tsk and for shame! *LOL* Cha-Cha heels, a shirtwaist and pearls are however optional!

Usually ironers stored in basements under decent conditions scrub up well.

While NIB covers and pads can often be found for those full sized Ironrites, if you have a bit of good heavy cotton muslin and a sewing machine (or better an overlock/serger) a new one can be run up easily. Just use the current roller cover as a pattern.

Double Knee Control:

Never fancied that much, guess because one is so used to the single control on my Pfaff, Frigidare and portable Ironrite.

The Ironrite manual gives great instructions as to getting started. As they suggest items should be drier than you are used to by hand ironing. This is because the roller spins so fast you want to have things dried on the first pass. Otherwise laundry will crumple and look horrible as it rests behind, and worse you'll have to keep going over the same sections over and over to get them perfectly dry.

Ironrite

I have that exact model. Be watchful of the light cover, it can break easily if you are not careful closing the lid ( believe me I know from personal experience). JEB

It looks like it was hardly ever used. All the wear just seemed to be from sitting over time. And it cleaned up like new!

One of these days we'd like to get one of these. But there is really very little in or house that needs to be ironed. Well, maybe with all of our 100% cotton sheets or pillowcase.....
