As you may have gathered, from this post, Jed was down visiting from Duluth this weekend... Since playing with Jon Charles' deLuxe 'Model 95' Ironrite this past summer at his home in Boston, I knew I had to have one someday. That someday was turned into this weekend... the first sale we went to on Saturday had this in the basement. I spotted the machine itself for $10 -- then I spotted the chair, across the basement for $15. I nabbed them both.
We left, went to some other sales -- then came back around 3pm to haul this beast upstairs and to the truck. It must have weighed 125 awkward lbs, but Jed and I managed to get it up and onto the truck, no problem. Robert carried the chair.
Thank goodness I had been texting about my find with Jon; he was able to instruct us to carry it up the stairs motor-end first, so the oil didn't leak out of the transmission!
It was a filthy mess, as you can see, from having been sitting in the basement. A good scrubbing with some de-greasing kitchen cleaner was done once the Betty Feezor spaghetti sauce was slow-cooking in the Crock Pot... It made some wonderful rags for Jed and Robert to wash.
It cleaned up really nicely! The pad cover was ripped, so I took it off and reinstalled it backwards, so I now have a fresh, unripped ironing surface. I will eventually get a new pad and cover for it! I also gave it an oil-changed today; drained out the 4 or so oz. of old transmission oil, and put back 5 oz of Royal Purple oil. It runs just beautifully! Such a neat, mechanical contraption! I ironed my shirt for work tomorrow... after dampening it with one of our Frigidaire laundry sprinklers!
Here's the Ironrite as found...
