A while back I posted on this forum (http://www.vandykes.com/forum/read/4/1308/1308Vf) that I was looking for 1956 of 1957 Kelvinator Foodarama. I wasn't really thinking many people would be able to help me out, but a couple of days ago a guy emailed me telling me that he had one and that he lived in Phoenix. He told me that he wasn't sure if it worked, but he wanted it out of his garage (it came with the house he moved into). He told me to make him an offer and we both settled on $500.

Sometime next year, hopefully, I'll be able to take it in and get it refurbished. It's pretty much complete inside, though I do need to reinstall the thermostat knobs and it definitely needs a paint job and some re-chroming. But all and all, it is in great shape!!

Sorry I haven't been around in awhile, I know I still have to post pics of my O'keefe & Merrit stove I bought. I just finished up my semester at school, so now I have time to post more.

I added a link so you guys can check out the Foodarama.

Any suggestions on what brand of polish to buy?? And where is the best place to find it? Thanks for any help. Terry

I've seen a refrigerator like this before - what a monster to move but it will hold a ton of food - and banish the "where do I put the bananas?" question forever! Congrats on a beautiful appliance aquisistion.

Steve (gyrofoam) used some of his McGuires clean and polish when he was here on the painted surfaces of appliances and it worked beautifully. On plastic, I've had good luck with a plastic polish I bought at an antique store, but I saw some interesting plastic polishes at the auto parts store when I was buying some McGuires wax.

Kelvinator

Thanks guys!

I'm debating about whether or not to paint a different color. It's peach colored inside so I think I may be a little limited as to what colors I can use. I don't want to paint it turquoise because that's the color of my kitchen walls. I would love to have it pink or yellow, I just don't know how that would look with the interior. I'm going to go to Lowe's and Home Depot and grab some paint color cards to get an idea of what may or may not work with it.

The moving wasn't too bad. lol

The refrigerator measures about 48" wide x 60" tall x 24 deep and weighs about 400 pounds. My husband and a guy friend of mine were able to use a dolly and bring it over to lift gate truck that I was able to borrow from work. I would have used my Dodge, but there is no way my husband and friend would have been able to lift that fridge into the bed of my truck. Luckily, living in Phoenix, there aren't many hills, porches or basements out here, so everything was leveled ground.

Thanks for the advice drmitch, I'll be sure to give it a shot. BTW, I love your kitchen and your fridge is so shiny inside!!

Color Combos

Hi,

I would not worry to much about the ext/int matching issue. GE had Turquoise and Yellow exteriors with pink interiors (search for GE ads on ebay and I am sure you will find examples of this). Remember, Martha Stewart was still in diapers when these color combos came out so no need to fret about it so much. My GE Americana Fridge is turquoise and the kitchen is Pink. No way am I going to paint over the original GE finish. To me, it is just fine.

You can see pictures in the members photo album area.

Cleaner/Polish

I sold autobody supplies for a long time and I`ve found that this Kit scratch remover is as good as many that cost ten times as much. Its usually at Walmart or dollar stores for about 2bucks. Heres a radio I recently finished with it. I would also use a good wax after it has been polished.

Thanks so much Don and Greg, I will get some of the Kit Scratch Out next time I'm at Walmart and also look for the McGuires Wax. I am working on a Hoover Model 67 convertible and the hood is really dull. I think this stuff will help. Thanks again. Terry
