My new SQ is here!

My AFN50R was delivered about an hour ago. I am so anxious to use it, but am waiting just to let it warm up a bit. We had temps overnight just under freezing, but I have to tell you the wait is killing me!

I also wanted to say that the capacity compared to my old machine is significant. My old machine was measured by the older standards at 2.7. The SQ by the old standards is 3.3. I can say that's definitely right. The new standards have it at 2.84 but my queen comforter fits with room to spare! In my 2.7 it was crammed in.

If you are all interested, I will give feedback once I start washing later today.

Im really impressed

First load was my alternative down queen comforter on delicate/bulky. This machine uses plenty of water. Comforter was thoroughly washed. During the spin, I put a half filled cup of water on top of the machine - it didnt even ripple. I was also pleasantly surprised that choosing the warm I actually got warm water (warm meaning it was at least body temperature). My tap cold is currently 54 degrees, and water heater is set to 120.

Im now doing a permanent press load. Boy I can fit more in here than my old machine which means doing less loads of wash.

I love love those pulse spins. I am pleased that when the machine fills the drum tumbles. I actually am not using the extra rinse on the permanent press cause I watched the whole delicate cycle and I am amazed at how much detergent comes out with those pulse spins. I tend to only put as much detergent that you barely see the suds - but the water is slick. I think I'd only use the extra rinse when I do DH's clothes since he's got sensitive skin.

I have to see how I can upload photos, etc. I use Firefox so I dont have access to the editor - and I dont have a YT account. How do you guys embed photos in the threads? Does this forum support BBS code or HTML? I'll have to dust off my photobucket account and upload stuff there.

Also, if memory serves me - do you guys use the dispenser for powdered detergent/additives? I think I remember someone saying they put it directly in the drum. These two loads I used liquid so they went into the dispenser tray.

Will the Speed Queen do warm water rinses? That's a feature that would be very hard for me to give up.

Warm Rinse

Yes it does. If you choose WARM/WARM the final rinse will be warm in every cycle. All other rinses are cold.

Had experience with the OPL version in Belgium at our laundry facility. I am impressed. These washers are build like a tank. No nonsens, just wash rinse spin and bam on to the next load. If I moved to North America, Speedqueen would be my first choice!

Vintage - this is my 2nd HE machine. The Kenmore in the photos was a HE front loader.

Askomiele - yep, no nonsense - gets the job done

Chris - 2 dials, one rocker switch for the extra rinse and a small push button to start the machine. Simplicity at its finest!

IMHO Miele Came Close To This With Their 12XX Series

Very limited cycle selections but if properly loaded and dosed with product would give excellent results 6kg load after 6kg load.

Sadly these units didn't last long before being replaced by the 30XX series. Seems after coming from the 1900 series Miele consumers wanted "more" control over cycles.

Thats a great example of a nice, simple control panel. Although, they could perhaps put a "Fabric Selector" switch on the machine, so as to control tumbling speed, water level and perhaps even which water tap is used, which I think would enhance the product's performance on the marketplace. 

 

By the way, how have you found the water levels on the various cycles during wash and rinse? Is it too high,low or "Goldilocks?" (Just right, if you didn't know).

I cant say I noticed a difference in the tumbling speed between Perm Press and Regular. It may just be a difference of how long the wash cycle is itself. On Delicate/Bulky it tumbles for a shorter duration with a longer pause between changing directions.

As far as the water levels - Goldilocks. For the wash cycle the clothes are drenched. You can see a small amount of water run down the glass bottom near the boot when it tumbles. While tumbling it makes a really good slapping sound. I would think too much water would defeat the washing action. It would just slosh in the water rather than being lifted and slap the tub. It may be there is a bit more water in the rinse cycles.

I like is that the water comes out in a spray rather than just an opening like my previous machine where it just poured out. When the machine starts, the fill doesnt go through the dispenser tray for a good half minute, thereby getting the clothes wet before circulating the detergent. The water also sprays during the time the machine pulse spins between cycles. When the machine pulse spins, the pump stops until the drum slows and then the pump resumes.

Fill Zone:

During those "Spray Rinses," does the machine spray over the top of the tub, to actually "Rinse" the suds away, or does it fire in via the side or onto the door. I know from our Miele that spraying over the door does little to rinse the clothes, if used in the manner described, as is the same with just standard water input through the top left of the drum. 

 

Do you know how high the water level is during the rinse? Do you have some sort of reference? I'm just curious, as this will be my first washer when I leave for University in a couple of years time.

Spray

Its hard to see exactly how far the water goes when its coming out. I tried looking the other day but right now my tap water is pretty cold that it clouds the glass a bit. I will try looking again next time I do wash. Also I dont use that much detergent that I have a lot of suds, so I may not be able to answer that question.

You cant see the water level during the rinse. The machine is set so that when the water has filled you can still stop the machine and open the door. If I remember, I will do a rinse/spin cycle so I can stop the machine and open the door to check and get back to you, k? If I stop it during a regular cycle and restart, it will go back to the start of the wash cycle - it wont pick up where it left off.

Spin spray

The spin spray is from a nozzle over the door. The spray is a misted fan spray that is directed into the drum onto the spinning load of clothes.

On the delicate cycle, the tumbling speed is reduced. The Perm Press cycle uses a shortened wash time and a shortened final spin.

Sure wish they had kept the boosted hot model around.

Congratulations! My local LG dealer recently added the Speed Queen brand. I stopped in Saturday morning to check them out---he had both a TL and FL pair on the floor---and I can see why people at AW rave about the build quality. Here's to many, many repair-free loads of laundry.

Update on Rinse Cycle - washer111

As Malcolm says the spray reaches all the way to the back of the drum (allowing that the clothes only half fill the machine when wet).

I also stopped the machine to check how much water is in the drum during the rinse cycle. I was doing a queen size bed pad. I moved it aside (soaking wet) and there is water up to the lip of the drum.
