I figure it's time to show my newest acquisition. I picked up this set a couple of weeks ago from a Facebook Marketplace listing.

The dryer squeaked a little at first, then it quieted down to a whisper! Much quieter than my Miele Dryer...

The washer needed a new pump (thank you all who chimed in last week). Pump installed and it works without a problem.

The old pump had a date on it of 1971, so I'm guessing that it was the original.

There is something satisfying/comforting using a 50+ year old set.

What I need are new lid bumpers (anyone have a part number)? I would also like an agitator mounted fabric softener dispenser. I'm not sure if they were available at the time, I appreciate any leads if anyone knows.

Guy

1971 pair of whirlpool, portable, laundry

Hi Guy, great those look to be in really good shape, probably weren’t used much, if you’re going to use them a lot, they probably should have a good going over at some point the dryer particularly as it’s very easy to do.

If you’re going to use the dryer as a primary machine and have 240 V available you can convert the dryer by installing the 240 V heating element for compact dryers it will double the drying speed.

There is a fabric softener dispenser available for that washer. I forget the part number of it. We’ve got lots of them laying around. I’ll give you one next time you visit.

Nice. It is amazing how much those washers can hold. I had the same washer 20 years ago. Saved me a bundle in time and money not having to go to the laundry mat

Congratulations on your “new” set! I had the Whirlpool version of these same machines that I bought new in ‘73. Being convertible was a real plus whenever I was able to find a rental WD hookups. The washer unfortunately only lasted about 4 years, but I used the dryer for 8 years before I finally got a full size dryer. The dryer really worked very well for a portable that could only use 110 current. Hope you get lots of use from these beauty’s.

Eddie
