I picked this up, rather, I had three large men pick this up for me the other week. It's a 1932 or 33 Coldspot. The cabinet is almost chip free and it has the original compressor.

Inside

I think it's the spacious 7 cu ft cabinet. There are four slots for ice cube trays, 112 cubes! No cabinet light unfortunately

The compressor is inside the upper door that opens downward. It's a GE motor with a shaft on both ends. One end has the condenser fan blade and the other the compressor.

The cord had long since fallen apart. I oiled the motor a few days ago and looked at how I was going to install a new cord. The wiring on the motor is accessed by a small cover like a newer motor. The problem is that this motor is now mounted close to a condenser, various cooling lines, and a couple other petrified wires that I am not replacing yet.

I thought that I would remove the motor, but I was unable reach a lower mounting bolt. During my efforts to loosen the motor coupling, I must have moved the compressor shaft because I was slowly leaking refrigerant. It's so2, so even this small leak was irritating!

I did get the wiring cover on the motor loose. I used heat shrinkable tubing to stabilize the two inches of the wiring that I couldn't replace. I connected a new cord and oiled the shaft seal on the compressor. I figure this hasn't run in thirty years and I wanted to let it run to clean up the seal. Thankfully she ran fine, but barely cools at all.

The next step is to charge with R12 and see if it starts to cool better.

Dave,

I don't think there's much so2 in it now. R12 needs for capacity or airflow on a condenser than so2 does. It can't hurt to try it. An so2 system can be topped off with R12.

sulfur dioxide vs freon...

I have been told by several old time refrigeration men so2 and freon are compatable. im sure the pressure readings are a little different, John Jowers at antique appliances .com can tell you for sure, if this is like most of the old Coldspots, it will have a tag somewhere saying Seeger Refrigerator Co...Evansville Indiana,as far as I know they made all Coldspots until Whirlpool bought them out in 57.

Mike Arnold told me R12 ran with a higher head pressure than so2. It's impossible to know what this unit can stand, but I figured I could charge it with some 12 and see if it holds. The shaft seal might be bad.

The refrigeration unit is a Sunbeam unit. The cabinet might be a Seeger. I'll have to check a tag. Many fridges of this age were designed with a drop in refrigeration unit to make service easier and the ability to replace the mechanics without the cabinet. This whole fridge weighs about 400 lbs.

Yes, I caught a whiff of so2 while I was wiring. I had to finish what I was doing so I kept blowing it away from me.

WOW!

Fantastic find Travis! It's amazing how good of shape it is in after all these years. I need to come up and see it sometimes and also talk to you about getting a monitor top. The wife has been trying to talk me into getting one.
