My vacuums so far...

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

I've tried a few power brush stick vacs, a B&D, a Eureka, none of them were any good on the long dog hair in the carpets, It always ended up knotted around the brush roll and I'd be yanking or cutting it off. You really need a bigger diameter brush roll for dog hair

I bought a brand-new maroon Eureka SuperBroom BrushUp in 1996 when I was 8 (yes, while other kids were buying toys, I was buying vacuums with my birthday money). I didn't want the cordless TheBoss version or the non-brushroll SuperBroom version, so I was excited to see this model, which had just been introduced. In fact, there's a picture of me with this vacuum...I'll have to scan it in along with others.

It had a 3-position switch (Off, Floors, Carpets) and was fun to play with, but the brushroll was teeny-tiny (as with most revolving-brush stick vacs) and wasn't really great at picking up dirt on the carpet. On floors it did a much better job. Suction wasn't too terribly bad either, but no match for a Quik-Broom, Eureka Super Power Cleaner, or Dazey Vac-Man of course!

On that Hoover, that's definitely a full-sized power nozzle with a big brushroll. IIRC, the Celebrity nozzles at the time (which looked similar to this one) had the "Beats-As-It-Sweeps-As-It-Cleans" beater bar. Definitely the way a stick vac should be made!

Hoover Power-Nozzle Quik Broom

Austin - As with many other vacuums that I had before I really collected, I would get them, and then get rid of them. I had that very Hoover Quik-Broom you displayed. As I remember, it had the long bag with a "bag cartridge". It also had a the regular Hoover power nozzle. Very effective. The bag was small however and the machine somewhat flimsy. Lost interest in it and gave it away. Geez, if I only kept all the machines I had, what a collection I would have.

Speaking of Pixies

I did keep two Pixies - The ones I really consider to be the true Pixies, with cloth bags. One from the 50's a blue one with tools that matches the 63 and a later one from the 60's with the tools that match the 65. Meant to be used as a auxilliary to the uprights. If you want pix posted, let me know. I have the original boxes too!

Quik broom with p/n

Austin,
I really like those Hoover quik brooms with the p/n. Athough considered outdated in not all that great a cleaner, I liked them and thought they did a very adequate job. When Fred and I were hunting vacs in the remote parts of Wisconsin with Tania, I found one and did a complete overhaul and found it to be quite a nice vacuum for light cleaning.

It was so nice that later, another vac collector wanted it and I sent it on to it's new owner. Bags are still available from Hoover or wholesale vac suppliers. Belts and brushrolls are available too so enjoy it for years to come and thanks for telling us about it and providing pics.

Do post the Pixie pics

So I can compare it to the one I saw. If I remember rightly it was brown and tan with a brown strap. Yellow/green would be nicer..lol.
How come the bags of the DAM's are so small? I'd be forever changing them with the dog hair and bird feathers/seeds in my house.

Pixie/Handivac I

I remember these Hoovers. I purchased the Handivac 1 back in 1976(new), at Woolco for $24.88. I still have the vacuum with its box. The Pixies had cost alittle more at Murphy's. The difference between the two, at that time, were the Pixies had the addition of the telescopic wand and floor brush.

Quik broom with PN

Hoover debuted that in 1977, a Handivac with the cassette bag and the Celebrity p/n.
Nice idea, but it was clumsy, and the while the whole thing was meant to be a lightweight cleaner, it weighed as much as a convertible!
I've had a handful of them come and go over the years, they all had the same problem too: The suction motor burned out! The Celebirty p/n was SO good that the wimpy suction motor could not get the dirt into the bag fast enough, and those bags were small, so there was lots of clogging......
Nice idea though...

Cassette bag! I thought I saw that dirt cup on a Quik-Broom before; just not the older ones.

How exactly did these work?

Cassette bags...

Austin,
The cassette bag was a cage-like holder for the paper bag. The paper bag popped on the cassette, then you slid the cassette into the bag housing.
Nice idea, tiny bag, and all on a cleaner that never passed mediocre in the first place!
I might be able to scan a hoover ad that shows the casette

BTW

I mentioned on the other vac thread going here about how quiet the Connies are... as you guys have so many different machines which of all the Hoovers is the quietest do you think is your quietest canister and your quietest upright

Hoovers Quiet????

I might use that term with the Electroluxes - especially the XXX and G but never with a Hoover. Anything that "Beats as it sweeps as it cleans" is not quiet. I agree that the Connies are the most quiet of the Hoovers probably because the exhaust goes straight down under the cowl. I really am not a fan of the current Hoovers so couldn't tell you if they have gotten quiet. The Celebrity line had a QS or quiet series. The uprights just plan make noise.

Hoovers were never quiet to me (starting when I was little), but that wasn't a problem because I LOVED the roaring "WOOOOOOOOO" sound the canisters made. What's funny is that while my (maternal) grandmother's Avocado Celebrity sounded like that, my Celebrity III sounded much different; it had a high-pitched whine similar to a compact canister. As for the machines I have now, the Dial-A-Matic and Junior are considerably loud, even though my Junior doesn't have the "infamous" bearing problem. The Convertible purrs nicely, even with the thumping of the beaters, and the Quik-Broom is quiet on both speeds. Fred, I was really surprised at how quiet and smooth-running your Model 29 was at the Convention.

And the modern (aka Plastic) Hoovers...nearly all of the uprights make noise; I wouldn't know how loud the canisters are.

Fred, really nice Pixies as well! The last one is super cute with its long "snout"...what year is this?

And from what you said about the early Pixie (which I see more often on eBay), were Dustettes still being produced at that time?

Dating Pixies

I will leave that to the resident expert Jeff Parker. I will be talking with him later and will ask him to post the answer. I would place it at the late fifties, early sixties.

Pixie matching...

Austin and Fred,
The Pixies pictures are both 1950's models. The first one would be vintage 1953-56, and matches exactly the model 63 upright and the 82 Connie.
The 2nd one pictured would be from 1956 or later, its colors match the model 14 Larkand would be vintage 1956-58.
I don't know all the models of pixies, but there was one that matched the model 66 Convertible, and one later one that matched model 68.
I'd also have to look it up, but if my memory serves me, the dustette was produced through the late 40's and them morphed into the Pixie in 1953.
I'll check on that one. While Hoover heavily advertised in the 40's and 50's, the Pixie/Dustette got very little press...
