Hey Everyone,

It's spring and I've got weeds and clover grass growing everywhere.  Does anyone have, or use, a homemade recipe that works well in killing weeds?

(In particular, I'm fighting milk weed, with roots that grow to China. Next door neighbors yard is infested with it and is now growing in my yard. I'm extremely frustrated. Have pulled two large yard bags of just those type of weeds.  It's killing my grass.)

I had been using Round Up, or at times, a cheaper knock off version of it. I live across the street from a medical Dr and he told me to quit using it.

I've got weeds 5 ways to Sunday.

Barry,

I can relate to your "neighbor problem", but most of what he has is dichondra and dollar weed.

This year I applied a really heavy dose of fertilizer on the yard on Good Friday.  I have a mix of Centipede and St. Augustine grasses (I prefer the St. A) and I use Scotts S for Southern Lawns.  It does fight weeds and I'm very pleased with the results since it was applied - and so is my St. Augustine.  You might see what's available for your grass type(s) and your locale.

Lawrence, I have used the Scotts southern lawn with good results also. My one neighbor told me that dollar weeds like water, he advised me to keep my lawn watering to a minimum. I have the same type of grass you do.

I agree with reply 1

Boil a few cups of the vinegar to help dissolve the salt. This was a recipe that was recently passed around a gardening site for poison ivy.

Milkweed is, in my opinion, a lovely wildflower that Monarch butterfly larvae feed off of. They do tend to spread and I have them all over my yard, I just dig the ones out that I don't want when they're still small. Try to keep a patch of it for the butterflies and bees. Just say no to toxic chemicals on your lawn.
