Need computer help

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to extract a specific portion of an online video, for example, a YouTube video?

Say for example, there is a two minute portion of a half-hour video. Can I extract that portion and download it, saving it as a specific file?? Is there software that I need to download to accomplish this?

Sorry, my computer literacy skills are not up to where they should be in some areas.

Hi Barry,

Back in the early 90's when i got my first computer I had a package that did what you needed. I just did a search "how do I edit a youtube file" and it looks like YouTube has an editor that can do what you want. I copied this off the search:

How to Use YouTube's Video Editor
Sign in to YouTube Studio.
On the left side bar, click “Videos”
In “Uploads”, click the thumbnail of the video you want to edit. ...
Trim the beginning or end of your video. ...
Trim clips out of the middle of your video. ...
Add an End Screen to your video.

I think there are YouTube videos that show you how to edit the files. I have done a few a few years ago.

Since you need to select uploads It sounds like you will only be able to edit a video you have made, not just any video on Youtube.

^^ This is true.  It's an editing function for material in a YT user's account.  There are utilities to download vids from YT and I suppose one could be uploaded back and set as private (non-public view) but YT runs a copyright check on uploads and probably would match it.

There are free video editing programs with varying degrees of functionality.  Search for them, such as a list of the best free, to choose one.  I recently downloaded VSDC Free Video Editor but haven't yet installed & tried it.[this post was last edited: 4/15/2021-18:04]
