We just got my mom a new GE gas range. It comes from the factory set for Natural gas but she has propane. My partner swapped out the oraficies for the top burners using the supplied conversion kit and changed the plug in the regulator. There were no parts for the oven or broiler burners. Does the regulator automatically adjust for using the oven/broiler with propane or do we need to change the jets for the broiler/oven?

Thanks in advance.

Changing to Propane

Before firing it up the first time I would double check with GE just in case there is a part missing. Propane burns alot higher than natural gas. You dont want flames to fill the oven cavity first time its turned on. Some stoves do work thru the regulator for the oven/broiler burners. Seems all gas appliances now are set for natural and they do have to be set with the correct orifices to work with propane or it could be dangerous.

Gas company has to know

Many states and municipalities in this country now have laws against a homeowner hooking up a gas appliance themselves. In Maine, for instance, the actual conversion from natural to propane gas MUST be done by a licenced gas technician and they have to label the product in a place that can be readily seen and technically, they are the only ones that can actually hook it to the gas supply and turn it on. I know that they can not hook up an older, say gas stove, that is match lit. They are now outlawed. It must be electronic ignition or standing pilot. Its probably a way for insurance companies to be off the hook if something happened but it also is a safety issue.

"Normally" there is a adjustment you make in the oven, at the top of the gas valve. Where the burner attaches to the valve, there usually is a brass orfice that you have to close for propane. Whatever instructions came with the range should have covered this.

got it sorted out

Partner stopped by the company where Mom buys her propane. They told him what to do with the regulator - some sort of adjustment - and all is well now. Thanks everyone.
