Neptune MAH4000 Repair

Latest project, repair of a friend's MAH4000 (S/N August 1999) which has been in my garage for 5-ish years.  I had previously replaced the door lock wax motor and repaired the associated damage on the machine control board.  A couple/few years later the bearings were going bad, then boot got torn.  GW wasn't in a bind for the machine so it has sat here for the duration.

Question of the moment is what's the story on this torn seal protruding from the shaft flange?  It's under the flange so reasonably isn't related to the bearing seal.  Or is it a part of the bearing seal that tore and got pulled under the flange?

Also note the excellent condition of the spider (after clean-up of some minor residue)!

Plan of action is replace the bearings (Tony Tool), boot, tub seal, belt, and broken dispenser frame & lid.

I would say it is part of the original seal that just happen to get caught under there.....

you do know that brass part comes off and a new one is installed, that is part of the old seal....

also, I don't install these as they come out of the package, there is a slight amount of grease on the seal and this metal sleeve, but I add more before assembly...seems to help it last longer....

after all the ones I have done, I should have invested in a tonytool, it would make it a lot easier...

and your right, amazing how clean some machines are, and then there are ones that make you think what in the heck were they washing!

Martin, thanks, that nicely clarifies the source of the rubber strip ... I figured you'd come through with the relevant info.    This is my first Neppy breakdown so I'm getting newly-intimate with the anatomy beyond eyeing the parts diagrams.

I may have more questions ... and any advice freely-offered from all is appreciated.

The bearings had gotten rough during spin but the drum wasn't seized, so presumably the shaft is not worn beyond reusability?  It's not yet cleaned in the pics above.

The machine had last been used by ranch hands and they probably tended toward liberalness with detergent.  There was some light residue/scum/mold (dried after years) but *much less* than the gnasty Duet I did several years ago.

the first time is intimidating, but once you get through that, theres nothing to it....probably one of the easiest ones I have done...with the tonytool, you will probably have it done in under an hour

the most difficult parts are getting the bearings out, and those clips that hold the front tub on.....
a few times I had to lay the outter tub over two chairs, and stand inside to seat the inner tub through the seals, those ones were tight...

use a wire wheel to clean all areas, and some light lubrication helps everything slide back in....

I also open the sealed bearings and pack them with more grease....
