Never installed KDS-19

So I stumbled across a never installed Kitchenaid KDS-19 and picked it up still on the crate. The person said it was still in the original box but it was in such bad shape so it was discarded. I’m not one to collect dishwashers, but a 40 year old never installed kitchenaid. I had to. Even after I read all of the posts describing this model as “loathed”. I read one post stating the build date was on the front cross member of the frame. This one is 1680 as pictured so I assume it was made the 16th week of 1980. Also saw the chart that showed this model made between mid 1979 to mid 1981 approximately. What am I going to do with this? I have no idea. Too cool to ignore.

Seriously, a Great cleaning machine. Better than the New Model Crap.

But don't think about Whisper Operation. You will know when you hit the Cycle Button. Like a Action Movie.

New KDS-19

Wow, where are all these new KAs coming from ?, I guess it stands to reason that a certain% of DWs never get installed and when you consider durning this time period KA was the best selling brand DW in the US.

 

One of the great things about the KD19 DWs was their good drying ability on Energy Saver dry. The 19s dried much better than the 17, 18 and 20 series KA DWs when they were used on the No-Heat dry setting.

 

Yes install it and use it, the only DW that can clean better are the WP Power-Clean machines mainly because of better cycle design.

My family had the same exact model. It was a good cleaning machine but took a long time to get through the cycle. At least in those days it was considered long. The key is to use the jetdry and you will get good drying results!

Thanks everyone for the positive responses. It is a heck of a machine. I wasn’t looking for it but I was scrolling through some appliance ads and the title read, “brand new antique dishwasher “. And you can guess the rest of the story from there. I forgot to include the cardboard front panel cover in the pictures. I’ll have to get that when I get a chance.

That really brings back memories when I think how many of these we installed and did warranty repairs on.

 

Be sure to mail in your warranty card as soon as you install it, the warranty says the warranty begins the day it is installed, Whirlpool is obglated to honor this warranty as they took over this responsibility when they bought KA from Hobart.

 

The best cycle to use for dirty normal loads with this machine is the Heavy Wash, assuming you home has hot water that is heated with other than a resistance electric water heater. It was always stupid that Hobart designed a DW that heated the first fill to 150F and then dumped it down the drain if your hame has a gas or heat-pump water heater as it is far more efficient and faster if the incoming water can warm up the DW and dishes and rinse away most of the food soil before getting on with the cycle.

To each his own I guess. I bought this exact model back at the beginning of the 80's and absolutely HATED it. Since it did not have the top sprayer above the top rack the glasses and such were covered with little specks of debris and such. It also would stop everytime the temp was low on the water to reheat and took about 4 hours to do a cycle. Didn't have that one long...

It's easier to overlook any of its flaws, than to pinpoint whatever good qualities anything new can offer...

Pair it up with the unused Maytag Halo-Of-Heat dryer, and even that sickly, soon to be an obsolete avocado green colored Kenmore electric range for such vintage, but out-of-the-crate goodness...

I found my KUDI23 just casually looking at CL one day and changed the city to Florence, AL since it isn't that far away and lo and behold there it was, had been installed but never run and had the packing inside it.

I've got that exact model.  I had been wanting to try the KDS-18 that many folks here love so much.  But I couldn't find one, so I bought a used KDS-19.  I envy your unused one!  These heavy, solid machines are so well-built like a tank and bulletproof.  

 

As John said, if you decide to install it and use it, then use the Heavy Wash rather than Normal Wash if your hot water is heated by gas or anything other than traditional resistance electric elements.  The Heavy cycle is identical to Normal except it adds an extra brief pre-rinse which warms things up and speeds up the cycle by reducing the heating time.  The Normal cycle on this machine is about 88 minutes plus static heating time, which I find adds an additional 20 minutes in my case.  

 

I have found that it washes well and it does dry pretty well for a machine without heated drying.  It dries as well as many European machines.  It also leaves dishes cool and ready to be unloaded straightaway after the fan-forced non-heated dry cycle of 40 minutes.  But it's true that it doesn't dry as well as machines with a heated dry (when heated dry is selected on).

 

The baskets offer easy and flexible loading and it can accommodate oversized items.  It can leave yibbles on items in the top rack due to the lack of a sprayer above the top rack.  This can be minimized by strategic loading.  The self-cleaning filter can be overwhelmed if the load has lots of certain food residues that tend to smother the filter.  It's not quiet but the pump only runs for a total of around 45 minutes of the cycle, as the rest is static heating and drying.  It may not be the best-performing dishwasher the world has ever seen, but it has to be one of the most well-built classics of American dishwashing and it does do a good job and is a pleasure to use.  Enjoy your new toy
