a year or so ago that I would go out in 40+mph winds and rain, to pick thru a pile of stoves, washers, dryers etc piled behind Sears, but there I was last night... LOL Lots of newer stuff, smooth top ranges, white faced Kenmores, etc. Did score one filter flo lint strainer from a smashed BOL model with only two toggles, a brand new set of oven racks for my 84 hi lo range, and some spare Calrod elements. Saw one nicer near TOL Kenmore washer in good shape, with the dispensor along the front edge under the lid. Most were smashed being thrown off the truck. Anyone need anything off a newer model Kenmore?

Only two toggles?

COOL-

I actually bought three stove off of the truck (drivers) that was delivering my new gas dryer. (These were the pick-ups from people that were buying new ones.)

I was able to clean-up and fix two of them that were gifted to a friend who had jsut bought a house and needed one for him and one for his tenants.

The one I wanted for me was a Caloric brand; a new black-glass door was NLA. Sad thing was the drivers broke the door. It was prob. intact when picked-up. the only thing the stove originally needed was a new broiler element.

YAY to rescue and recycle!

Sears in Calvert

It is the only appliance dealer in the whole county, and usually they keep everything in locked trailers, but I noticed last night as I drove back from the gym that something was back there.. must have been 30 or so items that are just sitting out in the weather, all to be junked I am sure based on how they were tossed.

Yes Steve, only two toggles.. and it was smashed in on the sides. There was a large gas stove there, with a griddle in the center, not sure of the brand.. if you still need the door..... :-) let me know.

I have not ever cooked on a smooth top, strictly old school here.. just as well, since I have three of the calrod style stoves.

I am going to look a bit more tomorrow night, this time with a flashlight to see what else is there just for fun.

Toggle-- When I bought ranges for the house 3 yrs. ago, I was positive I didn't want a smoothtop electric. I wanted coils, because I thought smoothtops were chump. Several friends said "Get the smoothtop, you'll won't be sorry." So, I relented and got a smoothtop. I LOVE IT! The burners are more powerful than the 13,000 btu. burners on my gas range and it's SO easy to clean. No regrets at all. In fact, I only use the gas burners if the electric is booked up.

Mine has a black glass cooktop, which is good for hiding minor spills.

ALWAYS a freikin trend-setter! Hot damn!

Same here.
NO ONE uses electric here in this area unless gas is not available.

I'm hooked on my smooth-top!

FASTER
COOLER (and a much tiny-er oven vent too!)
CLEANER
SAFER...than gas (There are more electric stoves in this country than gas, yet as a class FAR fewer accidents).

AND DOES NOT POLLUTE INDOOR AIR!
my little back-up gas range is now a vestigial *organ*

Turned my whole family on to it, and they are slowly converting FROM gas!

and wait till induction becomes affordable..OH LA LA !

Smooth Tops

I have my GE Smooth Top for 5 years now and LOVE it. I always like gas, converted to electric 15 years ago, but with the solid cast iron elements. The cast iron ones took too long to heat up and too long to cool down. The smooth top heats up almost as fast as gas, and the cool down is so much better than the coil. The smooth top is just wonderful to keep clean also, and it boils water much faster than gas, and the lower temps are also great for making rich sauces, gravies and keeping warm and melting butter.

Would never go back to gas. I also think the electric oven is far superior to a gas oven since I do a lot of baking.

Ya hear that Steve.... 'Butter'

Well for me,....i have gas and love it, always cooked with it.
No electric range can beat gas for instant adjustment of heat levels which i hear induction can very closely match.

I would be very inclined though to go with an induction range when manuf. offer them in 30" units.

Electric Ranges Smooth Tops

No more dirty grates to clean..

No more disgusting drip pans to clean on elec or gas.

No more dirty walls over the stove to clean.

My baked breads bake better and come out larger.

When I have a bufffet, I use the cooktop to keep the foods warm.

LOL ROFL LMAO

Hehe--

We can discuss/debate this till the cows come home.

{"Hello, dear. Did you have a nice time with Madge and Evelynne?"}

Give me a gas cooktop and an electric s.c. oven!

Okay...you two go to your corners and come out slapping (you know who you are) LOL LOL

Now, back to smoothtop ranges.

I have a question for those that have them.

My mother had one of the original white Corning cooktops in 1975. She just replaced it with a new Whirlpool Gold smoothtop range. It has a white top with a sort of white-gray speckle where the burners are located. On her new range, the specklkes over the burner area have somewhat unevenly dis-colored. That is, when it cools down after being used, it doesn't look the same as when brand new. She said the user guide for the new range stated that this could happen. Probably not even noticeable on the black smoothtops.
My brother bought one like mom's and the same thing happened to his and he took it back and got coils. He just couldn't deal with it, but that's another story.

My question is, has this happened to anyone else?

Bill...

Which brings me back to my question

Why were there so many of these smooth top ranges in the junk pile already? That would be my concern.. as I cook dinner on a 1954 calrod equiped stove.. :-) I have to add that this old stove bakes great, nice even results.. even better than the self cleaning 84 GE.

Bill,
I have a GE Profile that is all bisque color(the replacemnt for Almond) The smooth cooktop is bisque with spkeckles also. I have noticed that the cooktop did get discolored where the burners are ( they always looked a little tan), especially the one I use the most. I was just cleaning it with soap and water because everything just wiped off that spilled over. I have had it 2 years now and still have the little sample bottle of cooktop cleaner. Well I started using the cooktop cleaner and the dis-coloration is going away. The cleaner I use is called Cerama-Brite. I was told to also use it on the inside over window. I have noticed even on the 4hour cleaning cycle it does not come clean like my old P7 from the 70's did. One thing I did get for my range is the three porcelain coated oven rack so they can be self cleaned without discoloring. I love the smootop stove and would never want the coils and drip-pans again.

COMPUTERIZED CONTROLS?
Repairng a top element is expensive and requires a techncian.

(Because the outside got greasy and someone refused to clean it most-likely.)

Cooktop speckled

Bill, I had the same probem with my GE when it was only 3 years old. There was a discoloration under the cooktop, sort of black, you could see it when the burner was off. Luckily, the stove was under warranty and GE replaced it free of charge.
Actually, I think it was under the extended warranty at the time. They had no answer why this happened.

Cooktop

The burner was the back burner near the oven vent. I was wondering if that could have anything to do with it. At first I thought it was on the surface, (cleaning). However, it showed as a large dark spot when the burner was off, and a slight dark spot when the burner was illuminated. I am hoping that it was just a defect in the cooktop and I do not have this problem again.

Cooktop

PS: I was there that the cooktop was being replaced and helped the technician. It looked like the spot was burned on the underside of the cooktop. Maybe it was dust? The cooktop was only 3 years old at the time.
