5. THE WATER SOFTENER (SOFTWATER TECHNOLOGY)
5.1 Introduction
The water contains harsh minerals. The higher the content of these minerals the
harder the water is. Hard water can reduce the effectiveness
of the detergent, reduce the softness of fabrics and contribute towards shrinkage and colour fading.
This appliance is equipped with a water softener able to provide the right degree of water softening to preserve the fabric integrity, colour brightness and ensuring good wash performances at low temperature. The water softener should be adjusted according to the water hardness of your inlet water. A correct setting allows to achieve the best washing results and the
maximum garments protection.
To set the water softener correctly, please refer to 'How to set the water
hardness level'. 5.2 How to set the water hardness level The appliance allows you to chose between 7 levels corresponding to 7 different ranges of water hardness. Depending on the country, the water hardness is expressed in equivalent scales: e.g. French degrees (°f), German degrees (°d), English degrees (°e) and mmol/l.
If necessary, please contact your local water authority to check the water
hardness in your area. Check in the "Water hardness levels"
table which is the proper level. To set the water hardness level:
1. Press the On/Off button for a few seconds to activate the appliance.
2. Wait about 10 seconds for appliance internal check.
3. Touch the Stains/Prewash and the
Plus Steam buttons simultaneously (by touching the two buttons at the
same instant, as shown in the next drawing) for some seconds until the
display shows the default level C04 and the indicator goes on. It
means the water softener is active during washing only.

247 Minutes Cottons Washt Time (Std)?
Four hours plus for a "normal" cottons wash? You'll have rags before long after repeating that lot often enough.
Fall behind on the washing and it would be quicker to go down to local launderette, otherwise you'll be using that AEG for days.

That's for the Eco wash cycle. Basically, you are supposed to pack the drum until you have to force the door shut and then the clothes will be washed in (energy-saving) 80F water long enough to achieve the same cleaning as a normal 140F Cotton cycle. It's all marketing so manufacturers can show off how energy efficient their appliance is, while still achieving the required A class cleaning performance.
All the other cycles actually heat to the selected temp and run faster - of course sacrificing energy efficiency in return. A recent survey by our consumer magazine showed that people do look for super efficient machines... but once they get them home and see the cycle time, they don't use the Eco cycle - negating the energy savings they initially bought the washer for.

My AEG Oko-Lavamat has an "energy savings" cycle for cottons/linens. Claims to do a full load at 140F but with reduced energy use.
Far as one can see it does so by using less than the already puny amounts of water the machine already uses, but cycle time is greatly increased to around three hours. Obviously less water taken for wash cycle the less there is to heat, so there you are then.
Machine can get away with using such an even more puny amount of water for this ES cycle by running the recirulation pump constantly during the wash. This forces that small amount of water through the laundry.

Well suppose could wash *all* whites such as undergarments, bath and kitchen linen, t-shirts... the lot in one wash, but that isn't always wanted nor desired.

Our consumer magazine had this diagram in their November 2015 issue. The left side says "140°F Cotton Normal, 142°F actual temp, half load, 1.09 kWh, 2:10 hrs. The right side is the 140°F Eco cycle: 93°F actual temp, half load, 0.5 kWh, 3:25 hrs. About half a kWh in energy savings doesn't sound like much - but if the advertising says "This cycles saves you more than 50% in energy costs... A++++++ energy efficiency", people will buy into it. As I said above, the survey showed that only about 20% of users actually select the Eco cycle, mostly because it takes them too long and they think that every cycle, not only the Eco one, is as efficient as the energy label says.
This AEG is rated at A+++ -70%, which translates into 100% more efficient than A, I think. At only 0.32 kWh for a 20 lbs. load on Eco, this cycle probably only "heats" to 77°F... and then you end up with 4 hour cycles.

TIME is a MORE valueable resource to many over water or energy.Esp if they follow the safety rules and run the machine only while at home and awake.This nonsense has to go!!!

Its all in the small print and screen Laundress, we thank our Euro testing labs for those wash times, you have the options of selecting options just over an hour which incidentally will still give us great eco energy efficient wash results than those resource guzzling behemouths in many basements. I are pleased you saw fit to test out our Euro style washers that give the best results in energy efficiency and eco resources AND you do get to see what a little warm heat can do with our heaters !!
My Asko has flexi options from 15 yrs ago, can do a 90d hot quick wash with 3 rinses and super 1600spin in just over an hour...

Is nothing new in washing machine, Servis Domestic Appliances UK had a Multi-Fabric wash nearly 40yrs ago. consisting of a soak and tumble over many hrs (until you cancelled and selected rinse) this took advantage of the new generation of enzyme detergents such as Ariel which even now if you dumped all you clothes in a bucket or bathetub, added cool water and left steeping for a few hours would get similar results, again with the benefit of time to complete your wash...

AEG were never known to be fast. Miele was, and Bosch before the advent of VarioPerfect.
These high-load machines are optimized for loads in the realistic range, laundress, and AEG now has an incredible load size adjustment algorythm which they now advanced even further by adding an initial weight sensing via motor speed control.
These machines have 66l drums, equating to about 12-14lbs loads. Of all washers, tgese FLs are by far the best for partial loading in my opinion.
