New Alliance/Speed Queen Washers & Dryers

The control panel on the new Speed Queens have kind of a Staber-ish look to the design.

The electronic dryer is from Speed Queens Raytheon days. We almost bought a Speed Queen Electronic set back in 93', but ended up with a Whirlpool Electronic set instead.

Speed Queen advertises that they use metal gearing instead of plastic gearing which should be more durable.

Over the years, I have seen Speed Queen commercial washers in laundromats all over the place, they are quite umbitquitous. There must be a reason for this.

As far as Speed Queen goes, we would strongly consider a Speed Queen FL set for our next washer.

Question: What year was the first Speed Queen made with a perforated basket????

Perforated Tub

Hi ChesterMikeUK,

I'm not sure when SQ started the perforated wash tubs but I'll guess sometime in the early 80's. I know that SQ had the solid stainless steel tubs in the 60's and 70's when McGraw-Edison owned SQ. We owned one McGraw-Edison SQ harvest gold washer and dryer set in the late 70's. We also owned another 70's model harvest gold SQ washer in the mid 80's that we bought used. This model had the solid stainless steel tub and the fabric softener dispenser that attached with the clip on the agitator cap. This top of the line model also had a water level control in addition to the famous "overflow" wash and rinse. It also had a light behind the timer that lit up when the washer was running. I wish I had pictures of this machine - I would've posted them here. Come to think of it, the perforated wash tubs might've started when Raytheon purchased SQ from McGraw-Edison but I'm not sure on this. Maybe someone else here in the group knows for sure!

Gorgeous SQ's! I am from a Matyag household, but I always loved my aunt's late 60's SQ. They really are beautiful machines, and built so well. Good choice for your new ones, and keep those oldies but goodies!

I had no idea the Plastic outer tubs were that flimsy.

Thanks for the vid. Speed Queen. Definitely a quality build.

Now they should build a dishwasher like Hobart used to make KitchenAid.

The Alliance version of Speed Queen washers seem quite good. The ones in the 80's and 90's not so much. If you had no problems with your Speed Queen washers from the early 80's thru the 90's you are very fortunate. Not everyone was that lucky.
