In terms of dirt removing ability, it matched Persil, I can't say it exceeded Persil... BUT, I CAN say that it blew me away in terms of removing blood and grass stains!!! WOW!!! Not to mention the absolutely AMAZING scent it leaves in the washer and on the clothes, not too strong but strong enough that I can't leave any of my whites alone! I just gotta take another sniff!!!! lol

Jamie, looks like you need hotter water, longer wash time or bleach, or maybe all three.
 
I got it!

Yeah!!! My Ariel Excel arrived today!!!! (actually, it came yesterday, but the stupid mail person made me go to the post office today and pick it up).
I used the Bio on my white sheets/regular whites in 'warm' water. LOVE the scent, and they smelled even better, if that's possible, when I took the stuff off the clothesline. YUMMY! Can't wait to take a shower tonight, and then get in bed. :)

I didn't use bleach or fabric softener, cuz I wanted to whole effect. Cleaned very well, although I have to say, there wasn't much to clean. My whites are pretty white to begin with, so I can't say they went from gray to brilliant white, but the dish towels had some tea stains on them and they were all washed out (with no bleach) so I have to say it worked great. I just love the smell and it rinsed very well. So I give it an A+++ in my book.

I wanted to wash all my laundry in the stuff, but unfortunately P&G are a bunch of poops and won't release Ariel here, so it will have to be saved for special occasions. I will do one load using the Excel for colors...just to be able to have my work shirts smell like that all day...
The only issue I could say was that I had to use my finger to get the gel to dispense all the way out of my washer's dispenser. I didn't use the cup because one of the post's above, said the gel didn't wash out of the little cap very well. Well, seems it doesn't dispense out of a dispenser either. :)

Well, that's it. Thank you Spoodles for the link to the brit superstore. Without you, I wouldn't have been able to get it. Hugs
 
Jeff, I used a 60C wash and the longest wash time possible (Extended option) on the Extra White cycle which was about 45 minutes of wash time and then another 30 for rinses and spins. I don't ever allow bleach anywhere near my laundryroom, hate the smell, hate the results, hate the harshness of it on both my clothes and machines. My Miele washer and Bosch washer both state specifically to NEVER use chlorine bleach in them as it will cause them damage.

I have an ASKO, and I've washed whites on every cycle from an express 30 min wash to the 3 hr sani-wash-that's 2 hrs of washing @ 205 degrees with an additional 1 hr for 7 rinses.
But still, I have come to the conclusion that sometimes, you just need a hit of bleach! Manufactures directions be-damned. ;)

Jamie, I meant oxygen bleach/Oxyclean/etc, not chlorine bleach. Even some STPP might help.
 
Also Jamie, I didn't know you were using a FL. That accounts for most of the dirt.

The heavy cycle on our Speed Queen TL takes 30 minutes start to finish, and it's never left a trace of dirt on our whites (160F water, Tide Free with 1/3 c. STPP).
 
Ariel Excel Gel

Hi Laurent,
Please use the dosing device, I can assure you it will not damage your laundry. I've done a few loads of my Mums and Grans Nylon Stockings using the dosing device and no damage resulted whatsoever.

Hi Jamie,
Please try the Ariel Excel Gel with cooler water, it is specifically designed to clean as well at 15°C as at 60°C.
It has successfully removed Chinese Curry, Tomato Soup, Tomato Ketchup and Gravy from my white Cotton T-Shirts at 20°C. I suspect the Enzyme complex is designed to work best in cool or cold water.

That "thing"

Hi David,

I know you all us that little cup thing in your laundry over there, but it just seems so weird to throw a plastic cup into your washer! LOL. I can just imagine the klunking and smashing about it must make and I'm not sure about having that thing rubbing about all over my clothes, picking and snagging.. I know, how 'American' of me. (And I'm not really all that 'american'! lol)

I guess I could try it tomorrow when I use the Ariel for Colors. I could wash some jeans or something else sturdy and heavy. I did also get a little bottle of Dreft for Darks from the brit store, it came with a little bubble cup to pour soap into.

Thanks to you too, David for the zip code info so I could get into Tesco (I think that was the one I used the zip for).

I'll give a shout tomorrow if I have any clothes left after I throw that shredder thing in with the wash. ;)
 
Dosing Devices

Hi Laurent,
Yes it was a bit weird at first on this side of the Pond, and yes the earlier designs did clunk around quite a lot but the Ariel Excel Gel device is really quiet with just the occasional lite tap on the door glass. The Dreft dosing ball will work for the Gel just fill it slightly less than the 37ml line.

Don't worry about the dosing device, like David says, it is really quiet in the machine, I think you'll find the one from the Dreft bottle more noisy. The gel really does all wash out of the cap, and there's no trace of it when you take it out of the drum afterwards and it won't do any harm to your clothes. I guess we are just used to them over here! Glad you like the Ariel though!

Hi Simon, Hi David-

Ok, I put a load of towels in and filled the little device with soap. It took a good five minutes or more for the cup to be cleaned of the soap and was a bit of trick waiting for the darn thing to get near the door to be able to snatch it out. I have the water level set pretty high, so I only have about 2 seconds when I stop the washer to open the door add (or grab something out) before the water settles and starts to pour onto the floor! lol

I think when I use the color gel for my clothes today, I'm just going to squirt the stuff right onto the clothes.

mmmmm. The towels smell SOOOO GOOOOOD! I just put them on the line and the air just smells nice. Can't wait to use a bath towel tonight.

Disappointing :o(

Have been using Ariel Excel Gel in regular and Febreze variants for a couple of weeks now, but decided to hold off on commenting here until I'd had the chance to really put it through its paces and see what it could do. Am pleased to hear others are getting great results, but unfortunately after much experimentation it just isn't working particularly well for me.

Despite trying cold and 30*C temps, longer and shorter cycle times, and increasing the dosage of Ariel gel from 37 ml to 46 ml, the results have always been the same: very good overall whitening, but poor stain and soil removal. White socks, for example, came out with a tell-tale "shadow" remaining on the soles (as in Pulsator's pics above), necessitating rewashing from scratch. This is something I've never had a problem with when using conventional detergents, not even the budget or supermarket brands.

Suppose I could try bumping the wash temp up to my usual 40*C or 60*C and see if it brings any improvement, but can't help feeling that would just be defeating the whole purpose of this detergent. In which case, I may as well stick with the product I was using previously, and be safe in the knowledge that it will get the job done properly first time around. Will reserve the Ariel gel for prewash cycles, just to use it up, but doubt very much I'll be buying it again in the future. Especially not at full price.

To give credit where it's due though, it does smell fantastic!

I must say I am very surprised as I have had excellent results thus far and in cold 20°C too. I live in an extremely soft water area but that alone should not account for such variations in cleaning performance.

Why did you take the dosing device out of the machine during the wash? It is perfectly safe to leave in for the whole cycle but always remove it before putting the laundry in the Dryer, I think the Dryer could possibly get hot enough to melt it.

As I said to Jamie I am surprised at his and yours disappointing results. Indeed as you say increasing the temperature is defeating the purpose of the product. The only stain that has not come out for me thus far is a nutritional supplement drink called Fortisip, although faded the stain was still there and required re laundering at 50°C with some Ecover Oxygen Bleach added.

One must remember detergents are made for and tested against market conditions in terms of water (quality and type), soils and such. There are many factors that go into "dirt", even muck from outside.

P&G and "Cold Water" Laundry

P&G holds several patents regarding special enzymes use for cold water laundry. IIRC, P&G first used them in developing "Tide Coldwater", which indeed does contain enzymes, but cleans best in warm to cold water.

P&G also developed and holds patents on a oxygen bleaching system that also works well in warm to cold water.

Tide CW was a great detergent in terms of cleaning and stain removal when using cold water, (local consumer magazine rated it very highly), one just couldn't stand the powerful scent, so never bothered with the stuff again.

Normally to compensate for the decrease in thermal energy by washing in cold water, detergents desinged for such use are a bit more concentrated than their warmer water cousins. P&G's TCW is stronger than other Tide versions (something P&G does not really put about),so in theory one could use less product, depending upon load size and soil levels.

Tide Coldwater

Hi Launderess,
I have tried Tide Coldwater in both Powder and Liquid variants in my Whirlpool DD Top Loader, they are high suds detergents so not suitable for Front Loaders. I had excellent results in cold water, great stain removal and I did like the scents although they are quite strong. I prefer the Tide Coldwater Powder as I found it gave the whitest whites of the two.

It's odd that they don't make Tide Coldwater in a HE version. You'd have thought the 2 things go hand in hand!

One other thing I've wondered about Tide is why the various versions of it give different numbers of washes? They are all 2x concentrated and yet a medium sized bottle gives anything from 20 to 32 loads (IIRC) depending on the variant you choose, even though the bottles contain exactly the same amount of liquid. As they are ultimately the same product, why do the amounts you need to use vary so much? Wouldn't it make more sense for the same sized bottles to give the same number of washes?

You put that Tide Cold Water down this INSTANT!! I cannot believe, that someone so fortunate as yourself, whom has UNLIMITED access to ARIEL EXCEL GEL, would soil his hands by buying TCW!! TCW!! It's a disgrace, I'm deeply saddened and I just don't know what else to say. GO TO YOUR ROOM!
