Maybe Sunbeam will bring back the Coffeemaster Vacuum coffeemaker like they did the Mixmaster. It's not quite the same as the original but pretty cool just the same. I haven't been able to bring myself to buy one because I really love the originals. I might consider the coffeemaker though.

My tale of percolator woe!

So there I was. My "new" Presto percolator in hand. Just got it Saturday, started using it Sunday.
Picture it: early morning in Baltimore. Incoherent old guy with serious bedhead stumbles into the kitchen. Only one thought: Coffee. Now.
Refrigerator door opens. Blinded by glare. Throw arm in front of face like a vampire in daylight. Coffee retrieved from Box Of Bright Light.
Reach for percolator. Remove lid. No. Just glass knob. Lid still firmly attached.
Attempt to reattach knob. Doesn't work because the dang thing just snapped off!
Figures. Coffee pot's got to be as old as I am. Survived war, gasoline shortages, disco, the Reagan Years and the turn of the millennium. Now it's in my hands, and it takes three days to fall apart.
Now I have to find a hardware store that sells generic replacement knobs.

Community Coffee

I hauled 4 1lb bags of Community New Orleans Blend (coffee & chicory) with me to Massachusetts. I also brought some Tony Chachere's seasoning and Kary's Roux (for making gumbo).

I'm gonna teach dem yankeez how ta cook dat good food.

Percolator developments!

Well.

While I was out being a road warrior for work this morning, I came across one of those old-fashioned hardware stores. You know, the kind that hasn't changed since 1868? Unfortunately, they are having a 'going out of business' sale, so this cool joint won't be around much longer.

I had the broken knob for my Presto perc in the car with me (like to be prepared, dontcha know), so I took it in with me and asked if he had any replacements. I was expecting to get one of those generic Fitz-All knobs. The guy bent down, pulled out a plastic box and what was inside?

No, not the perfect replacement knob. Three of them! Two are plastic, one glass. I bought 'em all. Three bucks for the lot.

Since I was technically on work time, I didn't look around too much, but I'll definitely need to go back. There was a lot of stuff from like the 70's still NIB. Anyone remember when the Scum Buster was called the Scrub Brusher? He had a couple of Waring hot dog cookers--the kind that basically electrocute the dogs. Some West Bend (I think) corn poppers with the dome lids that flip to become the bowl. And of course, a bunch of actual hardware. I could spend HOURS in that place!

Sunbeam Coffeemaster

I went to the little town of Fairmount Indiana today,and saw an old Sunbeam Coffeemaster at one of the three antique stores there for $50.00. It looked to be in perfect shape. They are "findable" and affordable.

Are you sure they were Waring? I've had two of those over time, but they wre both Presto. If they actually are Waring, grab them.

If it's a Stir Crazy with the stirring rod, grab one of those, too. World's best electric corn popper. Add a little oil, add popcorn, walk away. No attention needed, will pop every kernel, won't burn the popcorn

I've tried umpteen different coffee makers, and generally don't like filter-coffee anyway, that's what I call a proper coffee machine!!

B&D Scrub Brusher

Haven't seen or heard of those in ages!! We had one when I was little hanging over the Wards dryer, as well as a vintage late-80's Dustbuster (Black & Decker stuff was so cool back then...especially the bright orange lawn tools). I LOVED playing with it and it was always fun to watch Mom scrub the tile and sink with it.

The battery eventually wore out since it got so much use. Same with the Dustbuster; seems like that thing was ALWAYS out cleaning something up!

By the way, check for vintage Shop-Vacs. Those old unchanged hardware stores are bound to have one still in the box!

B & D worn-out batteries

I keep all the paperwork to everything I buy, so when the battery wore out on my 1984 Dustbuster, I dug out the info for getting a new battery. I sent it off to B & D and they actually sent me a new battery for the 1984 stated price! I really expected them to either say teh battery was obsolete, or ask for more money.

This is a great little espresso maker

If you ever see one at a flea market etc. grab it. Made In Italy, called the Vesuvius. nicely shined aluminum, curvaceous shape. It has no switches, just plug in and unplug when done
