New dishwasher choice / GE or Maytag?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Nice! There are 2 models with windows now...the more expensive one has the new wash arm system. I actually like this one with the X arm like the old KitchenAid's. Good choice!

That's a beautiful KitchenAid, Steve, and glad to hear it's a strong performer. My next dishwasher will definitely be a KA. My TOL GE cleans well, but as John L. has mentioned, the racking/tine spacing leaves something to be desired.

I was in the local KA dealership recently to check out their new mock kitchen set-up. I was admiring the windowed KA in the display and overheard a woman say, "I don't think I'd like my oven so close to the sink." Never occurred to me before; it does look a bit like an oven.

I have to endorse the Maytag as well. If my in-laws have the MDB4949, who have terrible loading habits, who refuse to use anything but cheap store brand liquid gel detergent, and who refuse to use the separator slots in the silverware basket where everything is just thrown in business side down, all clumped into two or three chambers while the other three are completely empty, and THEY still love it and say it cleans wonderfully, then it would be a perfect machine for anyone who would prefer a straight-forward, no fuss dishwasher. It also has a very nice build, almost as nice as the WP WDT920, though I still feel mine beats it in the weight and smoothness of the door opening and closing and latching. I think theirs may also be scrubbing the inner cabinet because it wasn't installed by someone as particular as I would have been, but again, they don't seem to care so why should I, lol. I just have to check the rinse aid dispenser now and then because they also refuse to care about it, nor will they listen to me that it's absolutely necessary for good rinsing and drying. *sigh...*

Oven Door

LOL, yes it could be mistaken for that, but who has a stainless steele oven that is only 24" wide?  Reminds me of KitchenAid's under the cabinet wine or beer cooler.

It truly is a nice machine.  Could have gone with the higher end model, but decided that $1900.00 for a dishwasher to have a different spray arm pattern and the third utensil rack was not worth it for me.  A few more options on the higher model were available as well.  This one is perfect for what has to be accomplished in this household.

Thanks for the nice comments.  I am stealing Paul's original thread.  Maybe consider a KitchenAid Paul?????

Just checked Consumer Reports Online. Three KitchenAids (including yours) are at the top of the list, each scoring 85 (out of 100). Rated Excellent for washing, drying, and energy efficiency. The trifecta!

On topic: The Maytag MDB8969 ($650) is rated Excellent for washing and drying. They call Maytag's MDB4949 ($450) the best dishwasher under $500. Also rated Excellent for washing and drying. Both are rated only 'Good' for noise level, but by today's standards that's still relatively quiet.[this post was last edited: 11/19/2016-16:22]

I've never agreed with CR's ratings on noise. The MDB4709 I had when we moved into the house a few years ago was rated poorly for noise, but it wasn't loud by any means. You could hear that it was on if standing in the kitchen but with our open floor plan we could watch TV or movies and not even realize it was still on.

The MDB4949 that the in-law has is so quiet with a full load of dishes that you'd have to have the house silenced before actually noticing it's on. I actually took some interior video of theirs not long ago that I haven't gotten the chance to upload. I'll add a link here as soon as I do.

Andrew -

Confused - is this your maytag? It looks like the latest Maytag - but I know you had an older maytag and recently got a new WP

Noo no, haha. It's my mother-in-law's. I still have the WP WDT920. Unfortunately I didn't have the GoPro when I had the Maytag MDB4709. I used an old phone sealed in a FoodSaver bag one time but didn't get great video. The Maytag is now installed at my father-in-law's house that they're trying to sell. They needed a black dishwasher to match the other appliances in the kitchen, and offered to buy it from me, so I let it go. I have the PowerClean in one of the spare closets already and having two spare dishwashers is a bit too much for me with our current space. I loved the Voyager-Maytag aside from the tiered rack, but the new style Maytag like the one in the video seem to be just as powerful, even with using less water and having a slightly smaller pump.

Oh Ok

actually, I'm glad you made that video of the latest Maytag. I was wondering if they changed a lot since I got mine in 2014. It still looks like they have decent wash action.
