I realize that freezers are probably the least interesting of all the major appliances, but I'm excited, so here goes...

Having spent almost 15 minutes digging through my chest freezer to find a container of Cool Whip (complete with non-stop creative swearing) I decided the damn thing had to go. Besides, it was in dire need of defrosting. The local Frigidaire dealer had this upright in the store and it followed me home.

It lives in my tuck-under garage, which is heated/air-conditioned.

There are three shelves, a pizza box shelf, and three glide-out baskets. The compartment on the door is called a soft freeze zone, which they recommend for ice cream. At the moment, it holds a bunch of little tubs of frosting that I give out with homemade cinnamon rolls.

It's SO nice to have quick access to everything...and no defrosting ever again! Hallelujah!

I took a photo of the controls on the front door, but it was blurry, so this is from the online owner's manual. You set the actual temperature you want the freezer to be at, rather than having a warmer/colder dial. If the temp rises above 20 degrees, the (rather meek) alarm starts beeping, and it displays the temp inside. If the power goes off, it will tell you how warm the freezer got as well as how many hours the power was off.

Extreme Freeze: The compressor runs continuously until you de-select the feature (automatically reverts after 48 hours).[this post was last edited: 8/4/2012-21:41]

Thanks, Rich!

Chest freezers have several advantages: They're cheaper to operate; they are good for long-term storage since there's no cool/defrost cycling; they stay cold longer in a power outage. New chest freezers (I looked at one at the store) have nice sliding baskets and such, but I am SO over the whole chest experience, especially removing everything for defrosting. Nothing stays in my freezer very long, so I'm not worried about a loss in food quality. I feel liberated, LOL!

CR says this one will cost around $88 a year to operate. My electric rates are low, so I'll be able to cut about 40% off that amount.

Nice freezer Eugene no defrosting and everyting easy to see. What size is this one? Our big chest freezer quit last fall and we are jsut using our 15 cu ft for now. No more bending over and digging for you!!!

Very nice! I am sure you will love it!
Did your dealer also have the one door fridge?
I have thought about getting a set of these for the garage.

Our churchs kitchen has the freezer in stainless like yurs and two of the refrigerators. looks so good and much less clstly than realoy industrial ones. Hod temps wel.

Eugene 20.5 cu ft is great and the way you have it things stored in it is great too.

We replaced our mid size chest freezer last year with an upright Frigidaire as well however we made the mistake of NOT buying the auto-defrost model.  We're very happy with it though,, helluva lot more convenient than our chest freezer, no more digging around and it takes up way less floor space. I was sort of hoping one of the relatives or their kids might want it as an excuse to go get the frost free model.
