New Fridge Purchase

I have been in the market for a new fridge, just holding out until the right sale/price came along........was set on a Whirlpool 22cuft version in the StainLess Look, for around 1300.00...........

Well I was shopping at Lowes yesterday, and thought I would stroll over to the Appliances like usually do, at 90 MPH.........

AND, found this fridge, in the box, on clearance....reg 1999.99, sale 1200.00

Whirlpool true Stainless Steel.....30cuft.........they delivered/installed it today..........freakin' nice...........

it was a killer to give up the Kenmore Limited, which I have had since 1988, and loved dearly, which was also hard to find a comparable model......for the most part, still works(2 broken drawers, internal water lines snapped).....finding a new home in the garage....

That was a given......they have great warranty, great service, if needed, knowledge from past purchases......

got the 4 year extended....which starts after the one year manufacturer runs out...total 5 years...

30 Cubic Feet?

Well Martin, you know from remarks I've made elsewhere that I'm a firm believer in bigger is always better.

 

I see your new fridge has the long pads for activating the ice and water dispensers.  Those are the two things I like least about our 2009 KA Architect SXS.  They require a lot of pressure to activate, hence a fairly sturdy vessel with which to apply it.

Looks almost identical to mine. I have the 26 cubic foot in white. Been pretty happy with it for the most part. We do use a lot of ice so I usually will push the fast ice button before going to bed to refill the bin and turn it off in the morning and if i forget it resets itself after 24 hours. It does make some odd noises once in awhile, but what I found is that the door for the ice shoot is electrical and it will open and close every so often on its own to make sure there is no ice caught up in it. The dogs love it when they hear it. They run to the refrig and wait to see if an ice cube comes out. Sometimes there is and sometimes there isn't.

Very nice looking machine. You did good. You may find that your electric bill drops by $5-10/month as a bonus, as the current generation is more efficient than 1990s machines. When I replaced my 1995-vintage 18 cu ft with a 22.5 cu ft side by side in 2004, the bill remained the same, in spite of now having a large machine (compressor may be the same for both sizes, but it has to run more often in the larger machine).

In my kitchen, the fridge is on the right as soon as you enter the kitchen, and my old 18 cu ft upper/lower GE stuck out 8 inches beyond the counters---and thus 8 inches into the entry to the kitchen. For that reason, I bought a counter depth fridge. I wasn't striving for a built in look, but gaining 8-10 inches in the entry, with nothing sticking out, was a bonus. Limting oneself to a counterdepth frige raises the price, since there are fewer models and the manufacturers charge more for this "luxury" feature. I bought a Frigidaire and it has logged eight years of flawless service, no problems whatsoever.

I do like it a lot more now that its in place...........its hard to give up my Kenmore Limited Kitchen, piece by piece, the features in the new stuff is not the same, not to mention will I get that many years of service from the new stuff, so far I got the new stove and mirco/hood, and now the Fridge, the washer and dryer got electrically fried after the warranty ran out, only thing left is the dishwasher and the compactor(I have SS panels for these as well).........can't complain, got my money's worth......maybe its time to move on, these new units make the kitchen look dull...I may consider new paint colors, just for an update to everything new...

crossing my fingers for no issues from this fridge.......it is beautiful though!

I was thinking about the counter depth models too, because of its location, but one, were used to the bigger fridge being there, and two, when this offer came along, you just can't say no.....

has anyone ever known me not to go with bigger is always better......king size appliances, man, house, bed....it goes on and on....lol

looking at bigger Jeeps, and considering the bigger Commander....does it never end!

We installed one of these (or very similar) when I visited John Lefever last month, man are these things fancy. Air filter, all touch controls and ice mechanism in the door. Disassembling and transporting was interesting but that is indeed a nice fridge. Best wishes that it will be a reliable machine.

We just bought a new Whirlpool Gold fridge to replace the Whirlpool fridge that had the too wide liner. Lowes took it back after they even got the run around with Whirlpool. This new fridge is American built and the quality shows. While the other was made in Mexico. I was a tad leary about getting a Whirlpool again but so far its been OK. Here is a pic of the new fridge..Nice fridge by the way Martin!

Long Paddles

My ex bought what looks to be the identical model.  She kept finding water on the floor.  WHP came out twice and couldn't find any leaks.  One day the house was quiet and she was reading, then hears the fridge dispensing.   ???  She went into the kitchen and German Shepherd doggie apparently has figured out how to get a nice cold drink!  Busted!

Our lab Brandy learned how to get an ice cube out of the front dispenser of our old Whirlpool fridge too. But she wouldn't catch the cube. She'd hit the paddle with her paw and a cube or two would spit out on the floor and she'd find it and run off with the errant cube.

brings up a good point...WHY on earth does one have to pay such a preminum to get a counter depth fridge for goodness sake?!!! It's like the situation for what I call Manhattan dishwashers (18"), you pay more to get less! Some Sub Zeros I've seen are seriously lacking in true useful cubic capacity!

Counter depth issues.....its the same ole issue....

its the "when you have no other option, they got you".......

same applied to years ago, with portable washers/dryers, or "all-n-one"....these small units cost more than the full size ones.........

when you narrow things down to a specific, and very few options, it will cost you more, your not paying for size, your paying for the product to be configured to your exact needs, and not a big market for such.......

your looking for a custom fit, in a off-the-rack world......

this could be the reason why I got the Fridge cheap.....and so many in-stock availability......they make a fridges based on an average size of 32 inches wide, for most applications........very few places can accomodate a 36 inch unit....so the smaller is made in abundance, and sell very well.....

funny though, it works backwards for fresh cut-your-own christmas trees......6 and 7 foot trees are pricey.......but anything taller than 8 foot is sold at pennies on the dollar......bigger is better....even with 10 foot ceilings, I always take the larger tree....one for price, two, to trim the bottom, it gives me branches to work window boxes and wreathes around the house.....normally an extra expense, but with this....I get it all-in-one.....

but the bottom line is if you need a specific size, or configuration...they got you, and your gonna pay a premium because of it....

One other thing...........

when picking out a fridge......the salesman stated 12 cuft fridge is the average, and add 2 cu ft for each person.......I should have only needed 14 cuft....which is a joke.....I had this decades ago in an apt, and it was never enough space...

do you guys go by any of this?.......or is it by the size that fits your space?....or the home you live in?(sq ft and bedrooms)

I bought the biggest, and for the most part its only Mom there, but we only shop once a month, and stock up, so I need the interior space.....the extra chest freezer is for meats and home made cooking and freezing fruit and such.....the Fridge sets at the end run of cabinets, with no overhead, and 40 inches of space....I had unlimited options....but if I had a choice, I wish fridges came taller in size....
