This Ought to help GE better compete with the other front loaders. Looks really sharp.

I don't think GE has a clue on being different in the looks of their front loaders!
It looks like a combo between Frigidaire, Kitchenaid and LG thrown into one!?!
This is one area they should take a step back and say, "If we build it like the other's, would they buy?"
I don't think so, so they should stick to stoves and ranges!

As with so many manufacturers, they've managed to stretch 9 cycles into an advertised 26. Must be something they learned Frigidaire's Exaggeration School. My Frigidaire 3-cycle front loader is advertised to have something like 14 cycles....

And yet....
To me the controls are easily understandable, which says something in this day & age of menu-driven and computer-controlled cycles. Even if there are more subtle variations in cycles than some argue are really needed.
The sani-wash cycle is a good idea. Thinking ahead to avian flu pandemic on the horizon...
Price? I'm going to guess $1,200.

IIRC the MSRP for the washer is around $799, not sure about the dryer.

Low Price Is the Excitement

There has been a buzz about this new GE front loader for a couple of months now. Machine looks great, has the extra features and cycles, but the reason there has been so much buzz, is the low price!
They are offering a machine for $800 that you would pay $1,100 to $1,400 for if you selected Kenmore, LG, Whirlpool or Maytag. I am hoping they are offer this great price due to the low labor costs associated with production in China. I just hope that inferior components are not part of the design as well.
If this machine turns out to be a decent performer, it could start a downward trend in front loader prices. I guess the big negative is that other manufactors might be forced to give up making machines in the U.S., Germany, and even South Korea in order to get low labor costs elsewhere.

The prices we at HD were given were $799 on the washer and $699 on the dryer.I just wish that GE would get off their buts and release them already.They claim to be holding back untill enough are in production so that once they release them,there will be enough to go around keeping the factories from swelling and going into overtime.

$800 for that kind of capacity is impressive. Ha, my guess was in the middle of what you said they were competing against.
When they do come out, chances are there'll be some bugs that have to be worked out, as with any new product; so let's give 'em some time to do that rather than assuming any early bugs are fatal flaws.

Anymore when it comes to appliances these days, so am waiting for the other shoe to drop before passing judgement.
While it may be trun GE is able to bring a uber-sized, multi-featured front loader to market for under $800, am willing to be there is quite a bit of plastic in this machine and not just the outer wash drum. Am also willing to bet things such as motherboards/control circuts are not top drawer either.
As for design, the GE washer looks like the new Kenmore front loader or the He2, that is to say like several other front loaders already on the American market. For all the effort GE is putting into this washer/dryer, couldn't they spend a few pennies more on a totally "new" design?
All things being equal, still think the SQ front loaders are probably better deals for overall "last the duration" construction. GE may have moved up the rankings in CR, but I for one haven't forgotten some of the dreadful appliances including washing machines they have only recently put out.
