Oh baby things are getting steamy around here. None of this "cool mist" crapola in winter time NYC, we went for warmth.
We get about three years out of these (sorta) cheap humidifiers before something fails and they melt down..literally. The last one (a Crane) started to smell like burning plastic and had to be tossed. The one before that, a Honeywell, was destroyed by a subletor who left it on with no water remaining and apparently the auto shut-off failed. We found it with the plastic tank melted into a amorphous blob.

I can disassemble them to clean and do so on occasion, but not nearly as much as recommended or likely needed. That said they are not built well enough to last too many years anyhow so I figure why fight trying to preserve them when the components are of such a limited life span?
We use these daily for at least 5 months a year so we usually get our $79 worth (in this case).
That was splurging, the last one cost half that. But this is a vital appliance in our cough prone family so I decided to move up the food chain a notch or two with this one.

That looks like a very nice unit.  We have the opposite problem. Just got a dehumidifier for the bedroom old house, NW corner.  It ran for days no "old house smell" now.  This only happens in winter, the a/c keeps it dried out in summer.  A nice bonus is the warm air discharged heats the room.  Now the humidity is at 40%, cycling on and off.  Interesting how we all have different issues in different parts of the U.S. When I was a kid the folks had a humidifier cabinet sized and woodgrain I cant think of the brand that was on it. It was made by McGraw Edison.  Even as a kid I got the connection of McGraw..and SQ.  Will your humidifier take care of the whole house?
