Looks like the entry level model without the extra rinse option.  It must be around 25 years old.

However only great until it chews up belts and water leaks into the tranny. After that find an Alliance machine.

More seriously, what was the problem causing those issues?
Bad pulley alignment, under spec'd belts, poorly manufactured seals, etc.
I mean, can this machine perform with a couple of retro-fits, or is the basic design flawed?

I don't think that they even had an extra rinse switch on many machines back then, it was never really necessary anyway.

[ we just finished putting a main water seal and top bearing in a 2 YO AWN542 Saturday, the customer always uses the 2nd rinse option and destroyed the water seal. The worst thing you can do to many washers is over rinse things, without the detergent lucubrating the seal it fails sooner ]

 

The 80s and early 90s machines were a little more prone to early breakdowns, the main area of improvement is the main water seal, the new Alliance machines are also quieter in operation. Still for a $150 or so it is a great buy if you want a so-so boring TL washer, but you guys know me, I wouldn't have a dependable Care MT or even a New SQ TL washer in my house.
