I bought a refurbished dryer from a used appliance resale place yesterday…. It’s a whirlpool/kenmore 29” dryer 80 series with hamper door and top lint screen. The problem is there’s a loud drone that almost sounds like harmonic convergence lol. When I start a dry cycle it’s intermittent then becomes constant. Does this sound like rollers or bearings or ??? I have a 60 day warranty. Any ideas? I really want this dryer to work because it matches my washer!

More likely a fan issue. Those run at considerable speed - 2800rpm or 3200rpm, there alike, motor speed - which is equivalent to 46/53 odd hertz, so in audible range.
Those often cause droning if slightly warped or if something is caught in them.

Since the fan is on the exhaust it heats up which expands the material.

It could be a roller or bearing issue, but those usually make more of a thumping, squeaking or squealing sound.
Droning with resonance is more indicative of higher rotational speed.

29 inch Kenmore dryer, drowning noise

On 98% of US dryers the blower is running at motor speed which is 1725 RPMs, the way to diagnose this problem is to unhook the drum belt and see what the motor running alone sounds like.

It's very unlikely the blower would be the cause of the problem not impossible, but very unlikely I've seen it once or twice in my 50 years of working on these things it's usually a motor with worn bearings

I've heard several of these 29" dryers make what I would describe as like a resonant woo sound when running. Is that what this is, or something else? A video would be helpful. If it's the noise I'm describing, I've known dryers to run for years sounding that way. I wonder if they sometimes just sound different in various setups, like how the vent is ran, etc. I'm not sure. I know with my 29" Whirlpool dryer, which is just over a year old, one can hear like a mid-frequency hum/whoosh of the blower, but it's by no means obnoxious as you describe.

repairman came out today

I didn't realize I had replies! I've tried to figure out how to upload a video but couldn't do it. However, an employee of the appliance shop I purchased it at came by my house today and right away said it is the motor. He loaded it on his trailer and said he should have the motor replaced soon (hopefully tomorrow!) and had a loaner dryer to leave me! I declined as I do have a clothesline but I thought that was a nice touch. Thank you for all the comments and fingers crossed it's a simple fix as I do like this dryer - much larger than the 27" I had previously.

Yes... you do it two ways... Just upload the video to your youtube channel (if you have one) then copy the link and put the youtube link into the body of the message... OR put it in the "url link to share" below the body of the message which will make a clickable link in the body of the message

Interesting it's the motor... is that common for these 29" Whirlpool dryers? I can say for sure that as long as Whirlpool keeps making them, these are the only dryer I will buy... with the lint screen in the top...I feel like as long as you keep them clean and the vent run flowing freely...hardly anything ever goes wrong with them.. and if something DOES go wrong, from what I understand, they are the easiest dryers to work on.

Dryer motor failures

Motors and washers and dryers are usually very durable, but the dryer we're talking about is 40 years old and Motors do wear out we buy motors for 29 inch whirlpool belt dryers by the dozen you get a better price that way and we use a dozen every couple months.

Because of the quantity pricing and the ease of putting them in 29 inch dryers including service call and labor. We normally can replace the motor for under $250 and many people choose to do that rather than go looking for a dryer.

In this particular case I'm kind of surprised that they bothered hauling the dryer back to the shop it only takes a half an hour to put it in in the home, but some places are more set up to do repairs in the shop. Other companies are better equipped to do this type of repair in the home.

If they do the repair properly and go over the other failure points, this dryer could last another 20 years. Or more.
