This is a W/P direct drive washer inside. As far as "HE" goes, it's hard to tell as the model number that is listed isn't in any of my data bases for a breakdown. The MAT14PDAWW is though...

My guess is the only reason this machine is considered HE is because of the small load option not too often found on commercial toploaders...
