New Maytag - Old Maytag?

Does anyone have any info about the now-discontinued Maytag LAV3600 -- is it still a good machine? It's supposed to be based on the classic Dep. Care models -- is this true?

Any info would be appreciated -- trying to decide between this and a Whrilpool MOL TL, as in the WTW5800 or some such --

I hate to tell you this, with you being a newbie, but this is a bad weekend to ask for advice. Most of the real experts are off to Tucson for a wash-in. For what it's worth (and I am a diehard Maytag fan), I would buy the LAV Maytag.

From what i have read in previous threads, most members would buy this LAV over any other Maytag washer currently. From what i know, it IS still the Dependable Care type of washer with the Orbital transmission and enamel outer bowl etc.

it is the Dependable Care model..

and a great machine. GadgetGary has one and he loves it, but he is at the wash-in, otherwise I am sure he would have responded by now. I bought one of the last DC dryers this summer, replacing a 20 yr old Maytag, and I am VERY pleased...

I hate to be the sour grape but, plan on a new tub seal and bearing within 5yrs. Back in 97' when maytag changed their tub seal, DC took a turn for the worse. Then to add to it the price went up on the parts in question. At last check, it was about $125 for the parts + labor and service call if you have it done. If you decide to do it yourself, you will need the spanner wrench to get the tub seal loose.

Just something to think about.

Scott, do you think the new WP WTW models (not Cabrios) will be more reliable than the Maytag LAV3600?

The newer whirlpools should be fairly reliable. There track record has been good for a basic T/L. I know i'm going to start a riot for saying this but, for the money I probably would consider a ge/profile. From about 2000 to last october we had very few complaints from there products. Since october im no longer in the multi brand apliance loop, but I dont figure much has changed that quick.

Just back from a FABULOUS Tucson wash-in....Phew!!!!

Yes, that washer is phenomenal. After seeing all the old Vintage Maytags, this washer is just like them. In fact, doing some laundry from the trip in it as I am writing this.
I never owned a Maytag before this one, but, going to the wash-in gave me a great appreciation for those fine tuned machines. I think this one should last at least 40 yrs.

Now I would like a Vintage Maytag to go next to the new generation that I presently own. I really would love one with the lights on the panel and in the tub. And ultimately, in turquoise.

Walk, don't run and get one of the last DC Maytags made!

I would like to try to replace the corkscrew agitator in my DC with an older turquoise agitator with the lint filter and softener cup. Any thoughts on this? I was told that the turquoise agitator might be too rough on the clothes(almost like a shredmore).

Hi Gary,

Glad you guys had a great time in Tucson.....The dependable care washer you have has a low torque (code for orbital) transmission. That is why the agitator is smaller. Putting that bigger agitator in will stress the tranny. ( Steve is having a field day with this...considering my last post awhile back) LOL. Also the turquoise agitator is a press fit. You would need an "agitator stop ring" (sounds like a birth control device LOL)in order to use that agitator in your dependable care washer

OMG!

Sounds complicated to me...press fit; low torque; stress on the tranny; agitator stop ring....and to top it all off, the likes of a birth control device(LMAO)

Maybe it is time to call in the Maytag 'experts'(do they exist anymore???)

John is correct: putting the aqua Power Fin agitator will hasten the demise. What you could do is try to find the plain Power Fin 12 agitator that was designed for this washer and is still in use in the coin-op line.
