I just bought this new Maytag dryer (please see link) for my sister and her family. She has a 1998 or 1999 model Maytag Dependable Care washer, but I am now thinking of buying her the matching washing machine. It is available in both regular and Energy Star. How exactly does Energy Star affect a top loader and is it members' recommendation to get the machine with or without? Finally, are these actually Whirlpool machines? The dryer is model #MDE5806AYW and the washers are MAV4755AWW or MAV5920EWW (Energy Star).

Thanks for any help.

Run away from the MAV washers! These are the Norge/Admiral/Tragic Chef design machines and are junk.

Better to wait until they convert the line over to the Whirlpool direct-drive machines, or better yet (and cheaper!) keep the Dependable Care going for many more years.

Burp, if you can return that dryer, you should. I have an Amana pair and the racket the dryer makes is absolutely annoying. It has been junk since day one, it's the flimsiest dryer I've ever owned, and unless your mom's dryer is located in the garage or basement, forget the matching washer (which you of course should if it's a Maytana also) and buy her some matching earplugs.

The dryer is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I called and cancelled. I might have to pay a $75 restocking fee but I can live with that. Next time, I will ask questions first.

I am now thinking of getting her either a Bosch 500 set or a Speed Queen set with a front loader washer (with water heat).

Any member feedback in this area is also very welcome.

Maytag Dependable Care

I am not a dryer expert, but I have been pleased with the typical Whirlpool/Kenmore dryers with the lint filter top. As for the washer, the Matag Dependable Care that your sister has is one of the best washing machines around and it should give many MANY more years of service. The Maytag model LAV... is the only washer avaiable today I would even consider buying. Your sister has a great washer and I would not change it for any reason.

Dependable care ain't what it used to be,
Dave

I ended up buying her a new Speed Queen set (ATSA5AWN washer and AES68AWF dryer). Her early '80s almond Hotpoint dryer will be donated to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and I'm going to sell the Dependable Care washer. My grandparents bought it in 1998 or 1999 and my sister got it, along with the Hotpoint dryer, when my grandfather passed away in 2000 (my grandmother had passed seven months earlier). The washer is white and in great shape. It will go on eBay and/or Craig's List when the Speed Queens are delivered.
