@bluejay: Thanks, I thought it may be the ballast as well, when I removed it, it made no difference as far as how the light worked.Would that be a sign of the ballast not functioning? For how cheap one is, I don't mind buying a new one and seeing what happens..

@ben: Yes I replaced all bulbs. I put in the cool white bulbs that you mentioned, it was doing the same thing with the old bulb as well, so I doubt that's the issue.
As mentioned I will look into replacing the ballast.Thanks for the part number reference.
How can I find out which series of machine I have?

Control Panel Light Issues

Ben/swestoyz is probably on to something with his comment about the bulb and starter. The last few times I was over at my folks place I noticed that the fluorescent light in the washer was having a hard time getting started. It would struggle and flicker for about fifteen seconds or so, then light. Today when I was there the darn thing wouldn't do anything, so I went to the hardware store and bought a new bulb for it thinking that would solve the problem. Silly me, it made no difference. Feeling pretty foolish at this point I went out to the garage where another A806 sits waiting for attention, took the little starter from it and plugged it in to my folks machine. That did the trick. It turns out that the original bulb, though a little tired, is still in working order.

Been meaning to post sooner, thanks again to everyone for their help. The problem with the control panel light was the FS-2 starter. I purchased a couple from my local Home Depot for a whopping $2.38 and have been enjoying using my Maytags... I actually look forward to doing laundry now,lol.

No, that's actually my old Philco, it was my only fridge for over 5 years. When I moved I put it in storage for about 7 months, after moving, I was very bummed to find out it wouldn't get cold anymore. I still hear the compressor kick on, it just won't get cold... I'm guessing the R12 leaked out? I hope not... If anyone knows a thing or two about these old Philcos, please feel free to chime in..

That fridge has the shape of my 1957 model, but the handles of the 1958 two door I let go of,

Look in the archives for fridge advice. I vaguely remember something about a rubber mallet....

Thanks Lawrence. It was definitely one of the selling points to my old Craftsman house, bought it from the original family. Was told it was it was installed in 1960, and yes it's got asbestos! I'm hoping I could get a few more years out of the floor before I have to remodel it..
