Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Here's a new pic (sorry for the blurry one earlier in the week) of the Speed Queen crown on the washer. The vintage measuring cup happened to be in the picture as well...along with the dryer rack instructions that I received today. :) A close up of the Q is now my profile pic.

Splish Splash...

Here's a fun photo. No better way to play with my new camera than with some agitator action in stop-motion. :)

210 Degree Agitation Arc

There was some discussion on the agitation arc of Speed Queens...being in the experimental mood the other day, I placed a red and black mark on the agitator with a dry erase marker. It appears to be 180 degree back and forth at first glance, but if you will look closely the agitator is turning around as well as the color of the marks eventually swap position. So, not sure how that 210 is measured. Medium load, hot water, whites, with Borax. Enjoy!

Balance

I just love watching a properly matched water level to load size machine doing it's thing. Hard to say just how to judge that agitation arc with the tub shifting to the left. Wonder if someone should perform the same test with the solid tub machine and the marathon line and compare.

A properly matched load is a thing of pride amoung us washer people. :) It also makes for an entertaining load. I'm glad I've been recording my Speed Queen--sure has cut down on water usage as I don't have to rewash stuff just for entertainment. :) So when laundry day does come around it's like going to a live concert. LOL

Agreement

Nothing takes the edge off a bad work week like a mound of laundry waiting to be done.

Malcolm

Well I can definitely see where the marks overlap each other, but if it's 210 in each direction you'd think the whole thing wouldn't index the way it does. You can obviously see how each stopping point eventually does a complete revolution after a minute or so. Unless it is 210 in each direction, but the CCW tub indexing causes the whole thing to shift including the agitator.

Everyone says the indexing will stop. Hmmmm...who knows? I just know it's 100x gentler than my Whirpool...even at 180 degrees. :)

Indexing Minimal

Dan,

The indexing of the tub looks minimal to me. Probably less today then when freshly installed. I would expect it to stop altogether over the next few weeks. I suppose your machine doesn't get the usage that most of these machines do in the commercial environment or it would have stopped by now.

I agree. The agitation certainly does appear much more gentle than the DD machines on the market. Even the F&P machine I had a while back had questionable gentleness as the lower agitator fins seemed to grab garments and drag them through the water at the bottom of the tub. 540 degrees in one direction then back just doesn't seem gentle to me long term.

I'm going to make a delicate cycle video soon...probably early February due to work. It's the "gentlest" washer I've ever seen on delicate...truly like hand washing.

Empty Load...

9 minute video of Speed Queen toploader without clothes...demonstrating the long agitator arc by watching the "rocking" motion of the wash water--very much like classic wringer washers of a bygone era. I love my Speed Queen!

Love the video!
Great wash action.
Was just wondering, what type of lint filtration system does it use ?

Jim

Have you adjusted the maximum water level of the machine beyond the factory settings? Or does it fill all the way to the top at the highest setting??

Yep, otherwise with the new EPA standards, it would only fill to what would normally be a "medium" load. The fact that I could increase the load with a little skill is why I purchased it.

Toploaders are an indangered species, unfortunately. With clothes, the water is about an inch lower than what you see...with all the wash motion it does look a bit deeper than it is...as you can see at the beginning of the video.

I'm not sure of what type of lint system it uses...anyone else know?

Top Loaders Need Not Become An "Endangered" Specie

There are ways to work around and address problems caused by energy use. However given the current state of appliance making in the United States, the cost to benefit ratio probaby simply does not add up.

Water use could be reduced by going to solid inner tubs, or perhaps tubs with many micro holes, thus reducing the amount of water required. Increasing final spin speeds to 1140 (as was wont of vintage Frigidare "Jet Action" washing machines, would greatly increase the Energy Star ratings of top loaders as it would leave less water for dryers to evaporate.

Designing better spray rinse systems would reduce the need for deep rinsing for many loads, though it could always be an option. Know for a fact from using my Vintage Hoover TT, spray rinses done correctly, are as effective as deep rinses.

Of course if one is rushing to the bottom of the barrel and selling top loading washing machines for a few hundred dollars, then why bother?

Lint Filtering

I believe that the Speed Queen employs a passive filtering system. If you pull out the agitator, I think you will see the screen through holes in the tub.

I like how you see that agitator stroke a few times, then suddenly, the suds are annihilated and the whole thing is sloshing around. Very cool.

Oh yeah...that 210º stroke is awesome! Powerful, but incredibly gentle. I'm going to work on the "Delicate" setting video next week.
