New To Me AEG Lavamat and Lavatherm

Big Bertha is getting some new German cousins.

Anyone following my trails with Big Bertha (Miele w1070) knows the girl is getting on and perhaps should have some of her workload reduced. That am getting that tired of MieleUSA's attitude about repairs and or parts for the old girl. Just had the shocks replaced a few months ago but am worried about the motor and or bearings, if one or both go that would be the end of Bertha. Clearly some changes were in order.

Sold off the little Whirlpool compact/portable to a member who will love it to death, and am now awaiting arrival of an AEG Lavamat (88840)washer and Lavatherm (57770)dryer set!

As units haven't arrived don't have snaps of my own, but will ask my "Secret Squirrel" if one has permission to post the ones he took and sent.

Are these brand new machines, L? The back of the washer looks virgin. Thanks for pics---not familiar with AEG machines. Props to Kevin for his never-ending service to the AW family.

Very pretty...I've always liked this range of AEG washers.

I'm guessing you have a 240V line. So why on earth would you bother with feeding warm water when you, of all people, know the value of stepped heating for ultimate stain removal?

There is a good story behind these units, but will tell later, must get ready for work now.

Thanks for the manuals NMassMan44, but beat you to it awhile ago. When doing research on the units before purchasing found the same site to download manuals. Then AEG in Canada sent more when one ordered parts.

Am kind of on the fence about the dryer and it may eventually get sold on. Not a huge fan of condenser dyers for a start, also space is going to be tight. Really only wanted the washer as it will occupy the space vacated by the Whirlpool, but got such a deal on the set.

Cause the bloody thing takes >2hrs to do a normal wash cycle! *LOL* We shall have to play around with the various short cycles cause that isn't going to cut it! *LOL*

Looking at YouTube videos of it, it seems to run at distribution speed with the jet on as it fills up for the rinse.

...set to 60c and press the 'Time Saver' button once will get it to 90 minutes - twice for 63 minutes.

Interesting that it states 5kg for maximum load. Here they were sold as a 7kg machine.

Try the time saver - I 'comfortably fill' my Electrolux owned, Zanussi built Westinghouse and use the 'quick' wash almost every cycle. 60c = 75 minutes...40c = 68 minutes. Both with 2 very good, deep rinses.

I'm sure you'll play like a child in a toy shop anyway

You do like your European machines, I presume it runs on 240 rather than 110 volts

I will only add, don't forget the delay timer. I am assuming that you live in an apartment so perhaps noise will be an issue, but the delay start will allow at least some of the programme to proceed before the noise and vibration of the spin starts - personally I am a very firm believer in the benefits of starting a wash from cold. I usually run my machine at night (I am a very sound sleeper LOLOL) so using a cycle (including 2hr soak) of nearly 4 hours is no bother to me at all.

Totally agree on what ronhic said: Time Saver x2 and Sensitive is all I used on my loads: that setting would reheat the water even late in the wash and give deep rinses.

 

I hope yours does THAT as well: distrubution rinse!

Long story short this set was sitting on fleaPay without so much as a nibble. Seller was on the West coast and as normal for such items had "no shipping" as part of the auction. Listed as "new" we were interested.

As mentioned had been considering purchasing something to take the work off Big Bertha ever since the shock swapping saga, just couldn't pull our socks up to make a choice. It probably was leaning towards a Miele 3033 or 3055 since they would fit in the space vacated by the Whirlpool and quite frankly are the best of a rather sad lot of offerings in the USA atm. However reading various comments and still having a bad taste in one's mouth from how MieleUSA handled the "shock saga", wasn't quite ready. Had also considered nabbing a 1986 or 1926 but they require that funky 120v/240v hook up which would have caused problems. Also at this stage of the game wasn't sure about getting yet another older Miele that would require service or such at once or soon.

Meanwhile back at the ranch seller kept dropping the price for the AEG set as it wasn't moving. Long story short we did a deal and got the set for a price that will floor most of you, put it this way it is costing much more to have the items shipped than one paid for both.

Problem was seller didn't have the shipping bolts for the washer and couldn't be bothered putting them in if one sent. This is where my Secret Squirrel came into the picture.

RevvinKevin so kindly offered not only to collect the set, but store until the transport braces/bolts arrived, install same, continue to store until shippers arrived. What a pal, what a pal, what a pal.

Kevin was gobsmacked when he saw the set and by his visual inspection and then photos confirmed the units were little used, not totally NIB mind you, but very low usage. It almost looks as if the previous owners got barely a year or less out of them before they were put into storage. The person who did the fleaPay listing was not the original owner. The units were inside a storage locker he purchased the contents of which explains why he knew so little about what he had.

The plug on the washer and dryer are the same as on my German Pfaff ironer, so while 220v/240v they are pure without any of the 120v requirements of Miele washers. Seller saw the plugs and listed both as running on three phase power, which could explain why they didn't sell. I saw the listing and knew at once that bit was rubbish,but I kept well buttoned.
