I have a similar set and several other 1-18's as well.

These are machines that hold a lot and clean and rinse well.

The earlier Frigidaire solid tubs are great but when it comes to capacity you can't beat a 1-18 washer or dryer.

I wonder why Frigidaire had so many different models with similar basic features? Some washers with two selectors for wash and rinse temps and one for speed, others with one selector for both wash and rinse and another for speed, others with fabric selectors that controlled both wash temperatures and speed and another one to bypass the temp presets of the fabric selector for cold wash options!

Same for dryers!

And at to add to the confusion, some models were made at the same time with different console styling but otherwise had similar features as other models.

In theory, variety should make more people happy but I'm wondering if customers and salespeople cared to take the time to compare all these models! I guess GM wanted to offer colors, trim levels and options on their appliances just like they did on their cars (and in the seventies, there were so many variations in the trim, options and colors that you rarely see two identical cars of the same model from the same year!).

Here's a picture of mine to compare with Martin's and Partick's washers and dryers. 3 with different controls but there were many more!

Nice pics Martin and thanks for posting them. Someday if time permits id love to see more of the white Speed Queen.   I am envious of you, i can not seem to find a 1-18 or a solid tub sq.  I fear in this city the weight of the metal has caused them to get quickly scrapped out. Nice machines, they would be equivalent to the old "Custom Deluxe" machines of the 60's, two speed, many controls for wash and rinse or fabric controls from the 50's.

I have never seen a CD model with the lighted controls, I've only seen lighted controls on the Imperial which was the 3 speed model here in the States, I wonder if those were Canadian build? Do you know their history?

 

At the time, Frigidaire, to compete with GE and WP was selling custom lots to big stores which is why you'll see the "Gold Crown" models a lot. When you see that you know it was a custom store run and put together with a cafeteria of features to compete with Kenmore brand, WP's  cafeteria brand for Sears. You see it today in mattresses , a Sealy won't be the same animal bought at BOB"S as bought at Macy's but they both say Sealy on them. The spring count will differ as well as the topping.

My machines are from the US (I bought them in NY state). I think Frigidaire didn't make machines in Canada anymore at that time. They were apparently still sold here but probably in much smaller quantity.

Mine are from 1977 and I think they were top of the line models then.
From what I have read, this 2 speed WIC-A replaced the 3 speed WCI washer of 1976 and there were no more Frigidaire 3 speed washers available after 1976. The dryer is a DECI and CI stands for Custom Imperial. The dryer instruction manual says the matching washer for it are the WIC and WIC-A models but it shows WIC-A and I have never seen a WIC and I have no idea about what's different between the WIC model and WIC-A. My washer didn't originally have a window lid. From what I have seen, even the 1975-76 WCI models didn't have it and it seemed reserved to some MOL models.

Later in the seventies, the push button "Elite" (which was also a 2 speed model) replaced the WIC-A model and the Custom Imperial models were downgraded to the equivalent of the previous WIA model.

First of all....I am a dedicated SpeedQueen man....especially the solid tubs.....that aireated fill and overflo gets me everytime, not to mention the 210 degree stroke..........I am currently working on the White one, the bearings of the fluid drive need grease, right now their dry, and it continues to spin during fill and rinse.....a simple fix, but takes time to remove and install....and YES, I jump everytime the solenoids kick in....

and both machines, have pros and cons.......

I wanted to post everything I have learned from you guys and what these machines can do.....BUT you already know this stuff, your just waiting for me to explore and discover what you already know!......And I have, all I can say is Holy Freakin' WOW! ! ! !...I never knew these machines were this great....

its one thing to see a video, but to have this in person, and trying different loads and cycles, watching the roller mechanism, I am in awe!.....

amazing the power of the spin and pump in the slower speed, and then it kicks to high.....some machines are about worthless when it come to their gentle speeds.....

one thing that concerns me, the drain hose.....the hose from the pump to the cabinet port is 1 inch, and then reduces to 3/4 inch...wouldn't a bigger hose pump out more volume faster?.....I have changed the hose on the white one, the advantage is the tub is empty before HIGH speed kicks in.......

another concern is potential rust of the outter cabinet, during the spin/spray, a lite mist of water is thrown into the outter cabinet area.....I need to figure a shield to wrap around either the top or outter tub wrap around, just to minimize the amount of mist going out there.....

and at the advice of John, keeping the comb filter out during use.....that thing is hard to get clean without slapping it against the counter, and worried about breaking it......not that there is any difference with or without

but otherwise, another machine I have to sit and watch thru the whole cycle, afraid I'm gonna mis something....lol

Wow Kevin....this could take some explaining......lets start with the first one

I have a house in the city, the basement there is divided into 4 rooms equally plus a half bath, one side is family room and a bedroom, the other half is laundry in the front, boiler/heater room in the back, I have the 4 Neptunes in the boiler room as daily drivers.....in the front is my play space of some of my collection, right now theres the Speed Queens, the GE FilterFlos, and the Calypsos, plus space to work on them....just got all the plumbing installed, working on the electrical and then the painting before I am complete...theres also a Maytag stacked on the first floor......also a huge garage which holds several other parts machines

In the house with my partner and the kids, in the country, theres a laundry in the main bathroom, and below that in the lower level, is another full room of machines, again, right now, I have 3 Neptunes, the 1-18's, all hooked up, and about 8 more machines scattered around, plus this is also my workshop area here, I don't consider it a basement because were not underground, the landscape out front is built up to give the illusion of half underground....

I do need to update my pictures, but was just waiting until the rooms were done.....changes being done all the time, I need to keep taking pics of the house, for a before and after....but will be glad once its all complete to our liking...someday!.....just seems like its always a work in progress....

I'm "green" with envy! I have to come see them sometime. I love the 1-18 that toploader55 gave me a while back. They are such amazing machines. I will try to get some pics up soon.

Frigidaire 1-18 Lint Filter

Hi Yogitunes,

I had the 1977 1-18 Frigidaire WCD in Harvest Gold. I used to use a toothbrush to clean the lint filter-simple! Sometimes, I actually pulled an old nylon stocking over the lint filter, and BOY did it catch far more lint than normal! I sure wish I never got rid of that machine for the worthless 1994 Maytag! I sold that Maytag at a big loss in four months.

on the white one I have the basket screen, simple finger run across and its clean....

on the green one I have the bed of nails, was using a toothpic to get it all out deep down......once I got it clean, ran thru the dishwasher, and now its just for show....

thinking of a made up tray to use, just to have the visual of a waterfall filter....

The Frigidaire "Bed-of-Nails" filter

Hi!

I still have the bed-of-nails lint filter, agitator cap, and the bleach dispenser(NEVER used) from the Frigidaire! I also have the owner's manuals from the washer and I THINK from matching dryer. The dryer was given to a friend back in 1989 when I bought the BEST Lady Kenmore.
