Shouldnt the make automatic washers have the filler thingy on the outer tub on the bottom instead of the top why dont they do this? or do they

And why do many modern machines agitate while filling?

Assuming you are referring to top-loaders, if the water came in from the bottom, then how would a spray rinse be done?

That being said, the Bendix Economat filled from the bottom, water bubbled in up the agitator. That machine didn't spin, so spray rinses were not an issue.

Where have you seen a 'modern' washer that agitates while filling?

By the way, you *really* need to work on your writing and grammar skills, being as the written word is the primary method of communciation on the Internet. ;-)

I have a UK Hotpoint TL from the 1980's and that agitates whilst filling. It is supposed to start the detergent working with the water and aid stain removal. As far as I can see, it does nothing at all.

I remember the old Thor's (at least the ones I saw) would begin to agitate as soon as they were started and the water began to enter the tub. I would think that would create quite a bit of fabric damage over time. Don't know of any top-loaders sold in the US now, that would do that----although I understand after much discussion on this web site, that the Fisher & Pakel's "test" their water levels by agitation, when set on "automatic" water level settings.

Hi

My grandmother had an early 60's Lady Kenmore pair with the sudsaver and I can remember that when she would do her second load using the recycled water it would agitate while filling and then stop when it sucked in the used water and fill the rest of the tub with some fresh water. I left about and inch of water in the stationery tub that she would then drain out. What she told me was that after the wash water drained the soil would settle to the bottom and then when you reused it in the next load it would leave that inch there with the dirty stuff on the bottom.

I could see where agitating while filling could damage your clothes over time.

I think that some of the earlier automatics may have agitated while filling because you could first disolve the detergent, before putting the clothes in. I still do this. It must be a habit from my old wringer washer days.

The ge harmony agitates while filling

there could be 2 watr jets one used for fil;lling one used fir spray rinse

Interesting machine Chuck; I wonder how it does that?

The Hitachi version of the GE Portable fills from the top (and spray rinses as well), in a shower-type spray, so I'm guessing this could be the WCI-made Spacemaker machine. Do you have a picture of it?
