New Warnings Regarding PVC/Vinyl Shower Curtains

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Most if not all "soft" PVC stuff (table cloths, inflatable beds, etc.) contains these chemicals. They evaporate over time causing the PVC to shrink and become stiff and brittle.

when I bought a new vinyl shower curtain-promply ran it thru the wash to help get rid of the vinyl smell before using it-helps.Its kinda interesting-don't know what all of the hoopla about vinyl is-its the SECOND most used plastic we consume-polyethelene is the most used.Vinyl is a plastic that can use two types of plasticisers-the Phylates for soft vinyls and another one for hard ones.forget offhand what it was.At one time PCBs were used in soft vinyls!Phylates were the replacement.Vinyl is even used for wire and cable insulation!Hard forms can even be found in computer and other equipment cabinets! Its all around us!just don't worry about it.If you don't put the vinyl in your mouth you should be Ok.Saliva can leach out the plasticizers-thats why its not a good idea to give soft vinyl toys to pets and kids-they will bite and chew on the toys.

Another note some soft vinyls may contain lead as a flame retardent-stabilizer agent. Its OK so long the vinyl item isn't old and decomposing-the lead was used in the vinyl in some window shades and blinds. The concern for the blinds and shades was that intense sunlight in the window can decompose them-if the vinyl looks and feels "powdery" then replace it.So far mine have held up-won't give up my roll shades--HATE blinds. The shades block out the light and heat better-esp for sleeping from my mid shifts.

The 60's

When I think of all the stuff we were exposed too in the 50's, 60's that were later outlawed...Cyclamates, Hexachlorophene, DDT, asbestos, mercury, Red Dye #2 (wasn't it?), etc. how did we survive?

Red Dye #2 (wasn't it?), etc. how did we survive?

We also drank from the garden hose, drank from each others soda bottles/cans, and ate treats from he ice cream truck or our pockets without washing our hands! We've gotten too clean for our own good!

Cyclamates

The cyclamates ban was based on fraudulent research. No one has every demonstrated any health problems caused by reasonable consumption of cyclamates.
