Stiftung Warentest

So how does Stiftung Warentest measure up against it's US counterpart? I recall different items, from orange juice to food processors, being tested and rated "gut", "sehr gut", etc. I'm not entirely sure that I trust CR anymore..

that is a very good point, Ryan

I don't trust them either anymore: There has been a legal debate about which companies may brag about themselves by carrying the "sehr gut" or "gut" Stiftung Warentest label in their advertisements.
How much is "being neutral" but how much may a corporation spend on royalties to carry that label (etc. etc).
As usual: A debate continuing on end with no real results. The factual "how-to" rules were never publically shown nor discussed. The whole thing just trickled down to nothing and into oblivion (out of public view, that is).

Stiftung Warentest (as far as I remember) was largely rejecting any results from "Öko-Test" (a similar magazine but carrying a lot of ads inside their pages which made them biased in the eyes of Warentest). It all happened back then during the oil crisis when Öko-Test was coming up.

Nowadays both of them are as stinkingly commercial as they accuse their respective counterpart of being so.
*shrugs* and relying on my own product experiences here....

Ryan, you can download a lot of their older tests for free.
I`m not sure if it`s social responsibility or only a clever way of marketing that obsolete tests are still on their servers for the public.

"Warentest" focuses on a product`s performance whereas "Ökotest"`s focus is mainly searching for potential toxins.
For examle a dandruff shampoo has been rated "good" by Ökotest (no dangerous ingredients found) and the same product was rated "poor" by Warentest because it was not effective to reduce dandruff at all.

no trust for consumer magazines...

here as well.

The point where they all seem to fail is with tests of multi brand companies products, and models that only differ in spin speed.

In every multi-brand company (like Electrolux, Candy, Indesit...) you can find example of one model, badged to 2 or more brands, but they're identical inside (and sometimes even with look), however I've read a lot of reports where "sister models" got different results, once even up to 11%!

Also, every company has one model, differing only in spin speed. You can see (sometimes too big) difference between exactly the same machines, with a difference of one spinning at 1400 and other at 1600.

I purchased the magazine, the test was a very interesting read. The Gorenje failed (actually all three of the machines tested). It wasn't a big surprise, the BOL Gorenje machines feel and sound very flimsy so I noticed a few times in a German appliance store. Cheap and good was Beko. Very worth considering!
