I noticed Lowes had the Frigidaire Gallery smooth top range with convection on sale for $899, not bad considering the regular price is $1200.

Anyway reading reviews I noticed quite a few mentioned the glass top surface scratches very easily even if no pots or pans were dragged across it.

Sone reviews even had pictures of the surface having bubble like imperfections as if a film was bubbling off.

Anyway, has anyone experience with these newer ranges?

My grandmother had a 1996 Whirlpool smooth top and it has a slightly textured surface that was mottled gray and black with black burner areas. I don’t remember it scratching in the 23 years she had it. She got a new Whirlpool in 2020 and it has a more glossy plain surface like these Frigidaires.

I looked at the display models and it looks like the Frigidaires do have a sort of gray pattern under the glass so it’s not just plain black, but the surface is smooth and not textured.

I have noticed that a lot of used smooth tops have scratches on the burner areas so maybe they just get that way over the years but a nearly new one to do it seems like poor design to me. The bubbling is just something I don’t get at all.

Of course I’d really like to find a new range with a warming drawer and a panel light, but nobody seems to make any with these features anymore!

We have a GE convection with a glass top. We've had it for around five years, I guess. So far, the top still looks pretty much like new. We're pretty careful not to drag pots and pans across it, but it gets used quite a bit, so I'm sure it has happened.

I have had two GE Profile smoothtop ranges. I got my first one in 2005 in my house in Pennsylvania, that is the picture with the food on top of it. The second one is in my house in Florida, installed in February 2011. I had the light color because I do not the the look of the dark cooktops. I have never had any scratches or stains on mine and you can see in the one picture I have heavy Calphalon cookware I use everyday. The only thing I clean my cooktop with is Bon Ami and a 3M blue or green scrubby sponge. I found none of the ceramic cooktop cleaners sold work. The next one will be induction, but i will have to replace all my cookware also.

Mike,

Good to know about the Bon Ami.
We've had good results with a product called Cerama Bryte, but it can be difficult to find.
Which version of Bon Ami do you use? I know there's a newer powdered version, but it doesn't make the claim of not scratching, like the original bar.

I have a less than 1 year old GE smooth top. There are no scratches on the glass top. I don’t use my cast iron pans on it. My cookware is primarily Farberware Classic SS and I also have 2 Cuisinart 10” non stick sauté pans.

I’m careful to not drag the pans across the surface. I clean the top every time I use it with a dish cloth and hot soapy water. If there are any areas with some cooked on oil or other food I use Weimans Cook Top Cleaner with a soft scotch brite cleaning pad, NOT the green pad, they are too abrasive!

I find that this is the easiest stove to keep sparkling clean that I’ve ever owned.

Mike I do like how the white glass looks with the white paint yours have.

That said I also like the gray pattern of Eddie’s.

Good to hear these aren’t scratching.

I do remember my aunt used to have a 70s GM Frigidaire cooktop with the white colored top. It felt kind of porous if I remember right. That might be the early Corning type, but I don’t remember it having a name on it.

My grandmother’s 1996 Whirlpool range had the Schott Ceran logo in the corner of the glass cooktop.

Weiman Cooktop Cleaner

I find that this cleaner is really good too. I do use the Redecker non abrasive copper cleaning cloth. This is really really great. Works great with any cleaner and removes burned on food and stains real easy and does not scratch and can be used over and over also great on stainless cookware. I got mine on Amazon. The cloths last for months.

I took another look at the Frigidaire ranges. There is no texture or pattern in the glass at all. It’s smooth, glossy black glass.

If you look at the GE top in reply 6 there is a pattern in the glass. This is what I noticed as well in stores on the GE and LG ranges. You can see a sort of square gray pattern and there is a light textured feel to the glass.

No scratches after 8 years daily use

I have had my glass top 40" double oven for about 8 years and no scratches. I use Guardian Service cookware. No cast iron or club aluminum.
