Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

If you are gonna have an A/C....this is the one!.......

I had a gibson years ago......that AirSweep is the best....the fins move back and forth oscillating the air all over.....it was the best I ever had....could not find another one in good condition since.....suprised more manufacturers didn't offer that feature....

I just got a haier with the airsweep, only an 8000btu, but it is super nice to have that feature...

and I think the newer Friedrich's have an air sweep motion, when my 30,000 unit ever goes, that will be my next choice...

Did Gibson make the A/C units for Montgomery Wards Signature Brand? We had a few of the Signature window units and they look somewhat like this.
Very good air-conditioners.

Hmmmmm...

It's a pity it has a cobbled together grill.

Swing

I used to have a Mazda 929S that had ac vents that would swing back and forth. Spreading cool air throughout the cabin.

yeah that grill doesn't look like the original.....I give an "A" for effort, it at least functions, maybe not the best looking, but works......

Malsom, a buddy of mine had a Mazda with that option too, again, the only one with that feature.....neat idea......

I remember the Renault Fuego Turbo, when you turned on the A/C, a little Penguin would pop out!.....

In 1985, Mazda did not put a filter screen over the power steering pump intake. A tiny particle got sucked into my brother's car's power steering and clogged a port, resulting in the wheels locking to the left which threw the car into the median, killing him. About a year after his death, a lawsuit against Mazda for the death of a man whose Mazda wound up upside down in Rock Creek where he died was won by the widow and the details came out. I am very glad that you all survived your Mazdas.

Tom, that is a sad, sad story. I'm surprised there wasn't a class action suit against Mazda, but perhaps incidents were infrequent enough to skirt a recall and any resulting litigation.

We bought an '85 Audi 5000 wagon in 1987 or so, at the height of the commotion/recall over unintended acceleration. It was a great deal, of course, and a very comfortable car that didn't give us much grief at all. We put over 100K miles on it before trading it in. Once on a hot day when we swung by to pick up dry cleaning, Dave went in and left the car running while I sat in the passenger's seat and waited. Out of the blue, just sitting there, the car went from idling to super high RPM and then down again. It never did it again. By that time the car had over 100K miles on it. That was proof enough to me that Audi's claims of drivers mistakenly hitting the gas pedal were total BS, and I was vigilant with the car from that day forward.

Getting back to the A/C discussion . . . In the late-ish 80's I rented a Mazda that had the sweep feature on the A/C. I couldn't help but wonder why more car makers didn't offer it, and can't recall if it was possible to shut off the sweep action if you wanted to keep it aimed in one spot.

We got a very small Sharp window A/C unit from Dave's daughter and son-in-law this past April when they moved into their new house, which has central air. The Sharp has louvers that can be aimed but don't sweep, which is perfect for our situation. The two small bedrooms upstairs, one of which we use as our office, can be uncomfortable on hot days and the Sharp can get both of them cooled down with the louvers aimed to direct the air flow across the hallway. This will go down as the most comfortable summer upstairs in the 85+ year history of this house.

Tom, what a tragic tale. Sorry about your brother. Thank You for sharing with us. Seems many times a tale of caution gets swept under the rug by big Money. Was Gibson the AC company that advertized the "panic button" really only the high speed blower speed. alr

Gibson A/Cs

Gibson made the lower line of Sears window A/Cs from the late 1960s onward [ the better units were Whirlpool built ], Gibson became part of WCI and built a lot of window A/Cs. They were fairly good performing A/Cs but tended to rust out and were difficult to repair because of all the rust, they certainly were not as well built as WP and GE window A/Cs were. The Air-Sweep feature was a big Gibson thing, fortunately you could turn it off, I either want cool air blowing on me or not, not blowing on me 1/2 the time. I cannot imagine a car with that feature, it is easy to see why no one does it today, it would probably cause an accident.

John does have somewhat a point.....

I do like the AirSweep feature and motion to distrute the air......

but also recall my fathers answer to not having A/C, a simple oscillating fan will keep you cool he claims......

so there we all were in the living room, sitting on the floor watching TV...as if waiting for a bus!......Wondering when is THAT air flow gonna get here!
