No Gentle Speed Whirlpool Washer

My 1974 (?) Whirlpool washer model LFA5700G1 will not engage in gentle agitation or spin.  Normal cycle works fine.  Gentle/Knit/Perm Press will fill but only buzzes when trying to agitate and spin.  Neutral drain works fine since it’s Normal speed.  Any ideas?

I am no expert. Just wanted to say that's a great looking Whirlpool. I always loved the shift from gentle wash to neutral drain. Very dramatic. Could it be a motor problem with your machine?

L"F" series is 1978-79 model-year.  Check for a wire burned or loose on the motor.  Or bad timer.  Or bad motor.

Beautiful machine!! I agree my first thought is something is going on with the low speed in the motor windings.

Just curious, is the cool-down drain (Permanent Press and Knit cycles) low speed?

as a quick test, switch the wires on the motor terminals....

set machine to normal, does the motor run on slow speed now?

no....bad motor

yes...timer or wiring issue

Good suggestion Martin, Switch the orange and blue wires leave the white wire alone.

I had this issue a couple of months ago on my Kenmore portable washer and ended up having to replace the motor since the low speed was no longer working and mad a funny burning smell when running

Permanent Press agitation downshift

Is it at the 6 minute mark in the Permanent Press cycle where the agitation downshifted from high to low speed?
